SOURCE: Upright freezer. Two shelves freeze up. One doesn't. Why and is this a problem

look to see if the shelves are in fact not shelves but evaporator coils . if the shelf is connected to small tubing, then that tubing flows freon that freezes the shelf. if its clearly not connect to any tubing or piping then its just a shelf and gets residual cold from evaporator shelves. if it is connected to tubing like the others and not getting cold then you have whats called a restriction. . particles have plugged the tubing and no freon is feeding the shelf. if that is happening then consider having a pro recover the gas , unplug the tubing , replace the drier and recharge it. if its an older unit and you are getting by then maybe not worth the expense.

check your door seal, by closing the door on a strip of newspaper all round the seal. this fault is usually air getting inside the freezer, it rises to the top making thick ice or snow.

SOURCE: top & middle shelves COVERED with frost/ice, not middle

That is normal. The refrigerant runs through those shelves. They are the evaporator side of the unit. That is where the freezing effect comes from.
Check door seals for leaking air.
Keep door openings to a minimum.
Get in there and get out.
Those things will help prolong frost/ice buildup.

How does the Ignis afe550/ig Upright Freezer defrost?

I couldn't find any info on your freezer but there are 2 main ways units defrost. The first is manual defrost where you have to unplug the unit to defrost it yourself. These unit are typically chest freezers and upright freezers that have no fan and the refrigerant runs through the shelves. You can tell because frost will mainly build up on the shelves themselves. The second is self defrost. These units will have a fan in the freezer and a evaporator coil behind a wall inside the freezer. This wall is usually inside the freezer on the back wall. These units have a heater that is activated by a timer and comes on every 8 hours or so and will heat the coil for 20 to 30 minutes. This removes all the frost build up on the coil and you should never have to do anything. I hope this helps.

Top shelves in freezer not freezing food. Also no ice from ice maker. Seems cold air has stopped coming out of top vent

We had the same problem with our refrigerator just yesterday. Defrosting (even tho frost-free) cleared up the airflow problem-- If it's frost-free, when it defrosts enough to allow air flow, the automatic defrost can take over. Cause was stored food blocking the vent between the freezer and lower part of fridge.

We have an imperial upright ''commercial grade'' freezer. The top shelf has 2 inches of ice on it. The rest of the freezer is not cold. Door seal is ok. freezer is currently unplugged and defrosting.

just to be sure that your door is sealing properly, put a flashlight into the freezer and turn off all of the lights in the room to see if there are any openings in the seal. Iam suggesting you this coz sometimes a small opening may pass our eyes easily....

if the door is sealing properly......
If this is the type of freezer where the shelves are the evaporator coils, the coolant goes through the shelves(tubing) and the formation of frost is normal and has to be manually defrosted. All the shelves should be as cold asd the top one. The fact that just one has any frost may indicate that it is low on freon. If this is the case you should notice that the freezer doesn't get cold enought just like you said... so check your freon levels.

This could also be because of the thermostat not sensing when the fridge reaches its set temperature and as a result of this the compressor will keep on running and build-up of ice will occur.

Follow the advices in the order prescribed above and you should be set

Sounds like an air leak. Check the door gasket. If that is sealing well all the way around, try putting a peice of foil duct tape over the two small vents in the bottom of the door.

The top shelf in my upright freezer ices up badly; but the rest of the freezer is great - no ice! What causes this and is there something I can put on that shelf to keep the ice from building up.

Freezer frost

An upright freezer that is not frost free will have the coils in the shelves (shelves are non-removeable) and that is where the frost will buildup.  If your model is like this then it will have to be defrosted periodically.  If your not sure then give me the entire model # from the sticker inside the freezer and I will look it up for you.
