Question about Black & Decker String Trimmer Cordless 12" 18V

1 Answer

Reloaded string empties and shreds continuously in seconds

Reloading Black and Decker strimmer G315 I can only get one string rather than two, then when it's on it simply shreds the string into short lengths and empties the spool in a minute. Done it twice. Are B+D operating instructions available on-line as I have mislaid them. What am I doing wrong?

It sounds like you may need to replace the head. It is designed to advance and stop, but your's isn't stopping. Try this: Clean the inside of the head and connection to the machine well. Put some graphite inside the spool and where it connects to the machine; be generous with the graphite. Put the head back on with some line properly wound onto the spoo (note arrows on back of spool). With the machine off tap the head on the ground enough to disperse the graphite thoroughly in the head. Now, push the head as though to advance the line, and pull on the line. If it advances a little and stops, it is working. Do this several times to be sure. If you can get it working like this, you're good to go. If not, replace the spool. Even with the new spool, occasionally put some graphite in it to keep the line advance smooth!

Best regards, --W/D--.....Please feel free to rate this solution. Thanx!

I have a GrasshogII. From day one, the spool goes through string likes it's candy. If I re-wind it backwards, the string won't spool out but at least I can use it for maybe 4 minutes before I have to take the spool off and extend the string out a few more inches manually. When I re-wind the spool correctly it will just spit out the string in a few seconds while cutting grass.

This has nothing to do with using graphite, this is a problem with being brand new and a stupid design issue.

Where can I get a new spool design that will actually work correctly?

Why does my B&D strimmer ST5530 use so much line. Once round the small garden and the spool is empty

Sometimes it is due to equipment malfunction, but most often it is due to operator error and underestimating what is needed. Light grass can use a cheaper trimmer with thinner line. Thicker weeds, small twigs, and especially areas around fences, namely chain link, can eat up string quickly if the operator gets too close to the edges and chews up the string. These areas need a heavier duty trimmer unit with thicker string to do the job effectively.

Hi Dave.
When you are using a strimmer against stone or concrete you have to just barely allow the tip of the line to touch the ground. If too much of the line slaps off the concrete, any sharp edges or roughness on the concrete will tend to snap it. What you could try is heavier gauge strimmer line which might last longer. I used to use petrol strimmer line on my Black and Decker strimmer which was 350 watt rated. I'm not sure what effect it would have in the long term though and may wear the bearings due to the extra weight.

Hi Bill,
If you turn it upside down you will see the strimmer head. You should be able to remove the protective cover which will allow access to the string cassette. The rest is self evident.

Threading line on black & decker GL301 strimmer

Do you mean that the string keeps feeding as you try to operate the trimmer?

If so, you are winding the string on the spool the wrong way. Put the string on the spool in a clockwise direction. This should do it.
