Question about Broan-NuTone FAN CONTROL SWITCH

2 Answers

I am attempting to replace an old bathroom exhaust fan with a Broan 680 fan/light. I am having a problem with the wiring. There are 2 wall switches for the light and fan. The existing wiring has red, black, white, and a ground wire. The 680 unit only has a blue and a white wire. How do I connect the 4 power wires to the 2 wires on the new fan/light unit? Thank you.

The red and the black are the hot wires. One will be the fan and one is the light. The white is the 'common' for both fan and light.
It sounds like the new fixture has got one hot for both the light and fan, they will both run all the time from one switch. This is the blue wire. Hook it to the red or the black, which ever one comes from the switch you want to control it. Hook the white to the white on the new fixture.
The green is just a ground. hook it to the new fixture green or ground terminal. Cap or the black or the red that you don't use. It won't be need for the new one. The switch that it comes from will not control anything now.

How do I remove the cover to replace the light bulbs on a Round Nautilus brand bathroom exhaust fan from the 1980's.

Most exhaust fan covers use a spring steel wire in a V shaped configuration. The bottom of the V is attached to the cover. There is a slot in the fan housing and by pinching the tops of the V togetherand insert them in the slots the spring pressure pulls the cover up tight to the ceiling.Carefully pulling the cover down enough to reach over the cover and pinch thewires together should allow the cover to be removed. Hope this helps.

Right now a single switch turns on both light and fan.
You want to put in a double switch to control light and fan separately.

But the problem is there is not a separate wire to each the light and fan.
You need a separate wire to each, but the circuit wasn't wired that way.
Usually when the circuit is wired for separate control, there is a red wire that also goes to ceiling box.

Unless you run another wire to the ceiling box, it won't be possible to control light and fan separately.

Electrician can do this pretty easily if there is attic space above bathroom.

Ok you only have two switches, so you would use one switch for your bathroom light, and the other for both the fan and the light, the light will come on when you turn the fan on.Connect the incoming black (hot) wire to both switches. Then connect the black wire to the switch you want for your light. Connect the other black to the second switch that goes to your fan and light. Connect the three white wires together (neutral) Connect all ground wires together, and leave a pigtail to connect to the ground terminal on the light switch. If you want separate switches for light in the fan and fan, you will need another conductor and a three gang switch.

NEED TO KNOW from scratch, step by step, how to wire 2 exhaust fan to double single pole switch? What is the proper breaker, type of wire and do you any kind of thermostat.

hi,
okay three wires into switch box? hopefully. it will need a 25 amp breaker at the panel, remove the one in the panel and take it with you to the hardware store get a 25 amp replacement. the conduit that runs the old fan should be sufficient or use 16 gauge conduit.
okay locate your power in wire conduit with tester. now all the white neutral wires go together take the black power wires and install it to one side of the switch make a small jumper wire and that must go from the black wire you just installed to the same side of the next switch. the two black wires coming down from the ceiling go to the empty side of the switches, one wire for each switch. depending on what you want, you can use a standard 240 volt wall heater thermostat for the ceiling heater or just use a switch, since those are just mostly used for when your in the bathroom.
if you only have one wire coming down from the fan your going to have to go up in the attic and fish a new wire for the heater and night light nutone makes a special three switch setup for one box for that fan, you might want to buy that, it may come with a wiring diagram too.
any questions write me back, your setup may be different..
ground wires all go together and are green or arent insulated be careful , take time

Replace motor in Broan 678 bathroom fan

I ran into the same problem, Lowe's carries Broan exhaust vents. They had both a replacement motor for all generations of 678 fans for $18, and they also had the latest generation of the complete unit for $40. I bought the complete unit, which included the fan I needed. Just unbolted it from the new bracket and bolted it to the old one. The new light housing, trim piece, and lens also interchanged. The existing one was old and yellowed, so this made for a huge improvement. All done from in the living space as well.

Replace exhaust fan with fan & light?

Let's say you originally only had one switch (to operate the fan). And at the fan you have only one black, one white, and one ground (bare or green). You can still put in a fan/light combo. but both the light and the fan will always come on together when you flip the switch. To do this you'd connect the black from the switch to the black AND the blue on the fan and connect the white from the switch to both whites on the fan and connect the ground from the switch to either a green or bare wire on the fan or to a green screw on the fan housing somewhere (whatever is available).
