I have an RCA player from 1955, runs great. A tube burned out about 3 months ago, and a new replacement tube arrived today. When we turned on the hi fi, no sound except from the needle. Help?

Unfortunately no! the problem is in the laser pickup assembly. If you still have warranty now would be the time to use it, if not! far cheaper to replace the dvd player.
Most high voltage electronic parts in a tube style television only have a life of 1-3 years. All of your internal parts are due to burn out or fail.
I would give up and sell/give away this tv and buy a new LCD or Plasma version. Repairing and old tube style tv is probably going to cost over 500 dollars. Just put that money to a nice new one instead. I know it sucks to say goodbuy to your old friend, but the era of the tube tv has ended.
Check CRT board the Video IC on it can be bad so you do not have to replace Tube be Very carefull when you remove CRT board from Neck of Green Tube so you do not Breck it. Check all 3 tubes make sure none of them are leaking out coolent fluid.

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
