Question about Cameras
The zoom works both ways via the slider control on the screen but only with zoom-in with the lever. When the lever is employed for zoom-out, the camera focuses, but does not zoom out. I have tried all the settings that I can think would be related to this problem and have removed the battery and replaced but no success so far. I have also reset the camera to factory settings via the menu system. The fact that the zoom works fine with the slider control on the screen seems to point to a setting issue and not a mechanical problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

This is a symptom commonly listed for DiMAGE cameras listed on EBay for 'parts only'. Dropping the camera I had caused the same problem and carefully 'smacking' the camera once again did solve the problem but that may have been dumb luck. Sorry but it is a service task that may cost more than the camera.

SOURCE: zoom/focus on hd camcorder
I had the same problem w/ the same camera. My wife fixed it by doing this: holding down the pictue snapshot button and the video record button simultaneously. Low and behold, the focus came back. I was amazed! Try it.
