if you can verify that the car charger is ok, try plugging it in to your computer using the usb cable. the 1412 should charge with the usb cable. if it still doesnt turn on, try and reset the unit,little pin hole on the side.

I'm not an electrician, but I do know that as long as the voltage matches EXACTLY (don't take the chance, most devices don't have a good resistor, or don't have one at all!), the current doesn't matter. I'll explain myself:
A consumer device (your scanner in this case) uses all the current it needed, and it practically doesn't need more! It take just what's necessary!
Connecting adapter which provide LESS is not enough, but more - isn't harmful!

USE a simple laptop adapter thats whhat i did just tell the guy at local comp store 12 volts and 5 amps they should have 1 or able to order it also try a used comp store they abound on craigs list and kijiji canada
