Briggs Stratton 5hp I/C starts ok, runs, but will not rev


My money is on a partial blockage of the main jet or the passageway to it. You're having to force it to run through the idle jet by fully choking the incoming air. There's not enough gas coming in with the choke open to allow it to run.

I'm thiniking total carb disassembly, carb cleaner and an air compressor combined with a ton of patience will take care of the issue.

Revs high when i change gear


Is it possible the clutch pedal is interfering with the throttle? Start the engine in neutral and allow it to idle. Press only the clutch pedal down and see if this increase the engine speed. If it does speed up the engine and slows back down when you release the clutch then somehow this operation is where your fault lies. If it doesn't alter the idle speed, then rev your engine and release the throttle to see if it returns to idle immediately. If it is slow to return to idle then your throttle cable could be sticking. This means when you change gear lifting off the throttle has little effect and depressing the clutch to change gear causes the engine to race as the throttle is still partially open.

How correct toro l/mower engine racing


Check the idling setting screw is not holding open the throttle butterfly common fault to fix if the engine races esp when no load is applied the idle throttlexpostion is to high thus the engine runs faster at idle turn the screw located on either the butterflyistelf so less screw threes is against the carb body this should start lowering the idle speed of the engine it should be around the 900 RPM approx for idling and top rev of 3500 at full throttle a rev counter is displaying a extra high rev count the it's the oil governed at fault or malfunctioning or sticking this will cause and engine to race badly to the point of engine destruction eventually
You may need to adjust the movement of the governing leavers etcetera best done by qualified servicing personnel a lawnmower mechanic etc

Hi, Ant if you have changed your fuel delivery system, air filter size or flow rate, mufflers or exhaust system or a significant change in altitude your carburetors need re-tuning and if your fuel system (gas tank, filters, fuel valve and carburetor) is contaminated with ethanol sludge, varnish, rust, dirt, water etc. or your bike has been sitting for months or years without running these components must be "PROPERLY" cleaned and reassembled "CORRECTLY" before any adjustments can be made. Tuning your carburetor is fairly simple once you understand the basic principals. You engine is a simple airbox sucking air in and blowing it out, it is finely tuned at the factory for maximum performance once you upset that delicate balance by changing air filters, camshafts or exhaust systems your performance may go down the and the engine may run poorly, you need to compensate the air-fuel mixture in the carburetor in order for the engine to run smoothly and at peak performance. If you are running multi carburetors you need to sync them first and make sure your air cleaner element is clean and dry for paper elements or lightly oiled for foam and meshed elements and properly installed. Here is how and where you compensate trouble: "TIP" if your engine "BOGS" you're not getting enough fuel.
1. Close to 1/8 throttle is managed by the air screw and pilot/slow jet.
2. 1/8 to 1/4 throttle is managed by the air-screw, pilot/slow jet, and throttle slide.
3. 1/4 to 1/2 throttle is managed by the throttle slide and jet needle.
4. 1/2 to 3/4 throttle is managed by the jet needle, needle jet, main jet, and air jet.
5. 3/4 to wide open throttle is managed by the main jet and air jet.
6. Wide open throttle is managed by the main jet.
If you are running lean, spark plug electrode color is white, engine runs hot and feels like it is starving for fuel you need to go up on the jet size or move the c-clip down one notch. If you are running rich, spark plug color is black or dark gray, the engine runs cool, and bogs down when accelerating you need to go down on jet size or move the c-clip up one notch. When your carburetor is properly tuned for maximum performance your spark plug electrode will be a light tan color like coffee with cream. If you prefer fuel economy over performance you can go down on main jet sizes until a satisfactory level of lower performance is acceptable versus MPH, your spark plug color will be whiter and your engine will run warmer. These tuning adjustments will only make improvements if your intake and exhaust system have no air leaks or sealing issues and the entire electrical system is in proper working order and you have no mechanical issues.

2005 neon hard brakes engine races


While your car is running.......pop the hood and find the throttle body. The throttle body is where your air filter tube/hose goes to the engine. Locate the throttle position sensor which should be on the side of the metal throttle body. This should be the item causing this. If you grab the plug that is on the sensor and wiggle it while the car is running then the engine should rev and act up if thats the problem. If not let me know and I can direct you further. Thanks.

Racing of a Honda 160 CC lawn mower engine


When a small engine "surges" in all speed ranges the possible causes are:

*Dirty air filter

*Water or contamination in the fuel system.

*Breaks in the spark plug wire (leaking), loose or corroded terminal connections causing an intermittent failure.

*Misadjusted or malfunctioning governor.

Problems with surging only when under load or at idle are likely caused by carb blockage or misadjustment.

Lawn mower chugging


better late than never, I have the same mower

there is no throttle control on these mowers, if you look under the air filter the throttle is balanced by a spring pulling in one direction and a lever controlled by engine speed. if the spring breaks or falls off the lever will wiggle back and forth, more gas if the engine slows, less if it speeds up. you end up going fast/slow/fast/slow etc.

The tension spring slows the switching down and smooths out the engine speed.
