SOURCE: Need carburetor adjustment

I had a similar problem with my 23 hp briggs. While cleaning the carb I found that the great gas we get today had eaten the seal around one of the jets in the throttle body causing it to fall out. Replaced the jet and now runs like a champ. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Lawn mower will not stay cranked unless you keep pouring gas into

common problems to all older lawnmower, lots of dirt and dust the mower goes through and ages. I would first start by taking the carb apart and clean the filter with soap and water, allow it to air dry. also carburetor prob need rebuilding or replacing. Pick up some Carburetor cleaner at any auto part store and spay it down the carb, dont be afraid to spray allot in there and let it dry for 1/2 and hours. carb tend wear and parts need replacing just like any engines. 99% of the time lawn mower carb goes out before the engine will and common problems with all lawn mower. If you not mechanical incline or dont want to rebuilt it, just buy the whole new carb and replace it, fairly cheap easy to replace and will last you another 10 + years or more. www.briggsandstratton.com

Have you ordered a gasket kit for it? If you have already rebuilt the carburetor and still having this problem most likely means you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Take the carburetor off and look at the intake manifold, there is a gasket on both sides. A gasket kit will allow you to replace both of those gaskets which should fix your problem...hope this helps.

I'm surprised you can't move the linkage yourself. The spring is attached to an arm that goes back under the cowling. That are has a blade on it the sits in the airflow of the motors cooling fan. As the motor runs faster the blade causes more tension on the spring and changes closes or opens the carburetor a little. The throttle cable and the fan set the position of the carburetor. Check to make sure the the blade up in the airpath has not somehow gotten jammed. Also the choke setting can cause the problem you describe. Make sure it's linkage is not binding somehow...

Have a Briggs & Stratton 4.5 hp 158cc engine that will not stay running. I have changed the primer bulb, diaphragm, filter and intake o-ring. It will still not run unless I keep priming it with fuel.

Check to see if there is a small hose coming from the valve cover to the carburetor body--this is a fuel pumping pulse from the crankcase. Hope this helps!

Gasoline leaking into air filter on Briggs & Stratton engine

The float/needle-valve/seat need to be looked at in the carburetor base. The float is not shutting off fuel flow when bowl is at design fuel level. Look for dirt/varnish or anything that interferes with float free movement or preventing the needle valve to close with the seat--usually, just cleaning these parts with spray carburetor cleaner and wiping with a clean cloth will restore operation. Try not to bend anything on the float assembly. Hope this helps!

I have to close the choke for it to stay running it run rough

your cutting the air flow off to the carburetor allowing more fuel in, check all fuel lines, and filters, and fuel pump if you have one. If all ok than your going, to need to flush the int-ir fuel sys (clean). replace your fuel filter, and over haul the carburetor. replace your plug and oil too. Use a good aerosol carburetor cleaner. After your done use fresh fuel (stabulized). adjustment may be needed to the carburetor. Some Carburetors Are EPA and no adjustments are needed except idle screw. good luck I hope this helped.
