SOURCE: G1 Keyboard problem
i was in my local T-Mobile shop (UK) yesterday checking out the G1 before release date, Whoever said it isnt a high quality keyboarad has some serious personal issues. the keyboard on the phone is Really high quality, with backlit keys which are slightly raised to assist in typing, dedicated shortcut and programmable Keys and a really sturdy Sliding mechanism on the main screen ! as with most of HTC's QWERTY phones, the Keyboard is Top notch !

SOURCE: No qwerty keyboard
hi! i just had my "missing qwerty keyboard" problem solved today! im from hong kong and just got my viewty the other day, when i realised that i didnt have the qwerty, and there were no answers anywhere (manual, online...) i brought my phone back to the store. apparently, eventhough the phones' language has been set to english, you'll still have to set the "writing language" back to english. you can do this by going to: create new message >> message >> clicking on "options" (button at the bottom left of the screen) >> writing language >> then choose "English" >> OK >> and viola!! you'll see a confirmation that "language has been changed"
you can double-check by clicking on that drop-down menu button with the "pen icon & A" that allows you to choose text input preferences. you should be able to find "keyboard" there.
(btw, i love my viewty!! best phone ever! i hope youre enjoyin your phone as much as i am!)

Replace the keyboard -- it's not worth paying a technician to diagnose the problem, and there's little that (s)he can do to repair it.

Sounds as though you have changed it to a US keyboard by accident. Go into Control Panel and Check in Regional & Language Settings for Keyboard.
