More than likley it is a starting capacitor in the back of the motor. With the breaker off remove the back of the motor and remove the clamp on the capacitor use a rag or wear gloves as the capacitor may have leaked. If it smells burnt or is leaking it is probally bad and needs to be replaced, Replace it with an exact duplacate. If this dosen't fix the problem then it is probally a winding problem and you will need to replace the motor but the capicator at twenty to fourty dollars is worth a try first.

Pump humming means start capacitor is bad on motor, and motor is overheating and will soon burn out unless serviced immediately. First symptom is humming, and next is tripped breaker. Overheating will melt this pump.
Timer issue probably separate, such as clock motor burned out, or overheating melted terminals inside timer.
T40404R5 is fully repairable: Plastic insulator cover is 124T1952 or 124T2411A. Yes I would cover terminals so there is no possibility of high voltage arc to metal box.

My Intermatic T104P3 timer will not turn the pump on. The manual switch works and it does turn off, as set.

1) Manual switch is working, and that says electricity, circuit breaker, wiring, and pump are good.
If timer dial is rotating and keeping good time, then order new 156T1978A trippers.
If dial is not rotating, then order 240Volt WG1573 clock motor.

An electrician installed a new Tork 1103 24 hr timer for the pool pump. You can only manually turn it on and off. When trying to set the time, the dial is loose and does not stay in position and does not...

I think you have 120Volt pool pump.
Add a comment if this is incorrect since wiring information is based on this assumption.

(1) Wiring problem:
Evidence shows timer is wired in reverse (dial only rotates when pump is ON, and dial stops rotating when pool pump is OFF)
Electrician reversed the wires, but wires need to be tested.
Hot wire from circuit breaker always connects to L
Neutral wire from breaker box connects to unmarked terminal.
This will give clock motor continuous power.
Black wire going to Load (pump) connects to X
White wire going to Load connects to unmarked terminal along with Neutral wire.

Tork 1103 is SPDT timer with 3 watt 120volt clock motor that can control multiple loads and voltages, and can be wired many different ways.

(2) Loose dial. The dial should only rotate counterclockwise when moved with hand. The fact that trippers work when rotated by hand says dial is probably not problem. If timer is used, and trippers skip over and do not turn on Load (pump) then order P47 replacement trippers.

I hooked up a new T104 timer and the manual works but its not clicking on and off when it is supposed to or at all. are you suppposed to have the turn dial in a certain position or what

1) The dial should rotate as time passes.
Set trippers on dial at times you want timer to turn on-off.
To set current time: Pull out yellow dial and rotate dial until current time lines up with silver pointer located at 6 o'clock position.

2) If manual override turns Load on-off but dial doesn't rotate continuously, then you have incorrect wiring.
Most common mistake is confusing Load wires (wires going to light, fan, motor, pump) with Line wires coming from breaker box.

3) Another possibility is that you have wrong timer: T104 has 240V clock motor.
If your circuit has 120V instead of 240, then clock motor will not rotate dial.
You might need to exchange timer for T101 or T103 timer (see wiring for these timers on link above)

4) How box timers work.
Clock motor rotates dial.
Trippers on dial push lever back and forth.
Lever moves copper contacts that open and close circuit

Can I used the T103M dpst spst timer for christmas lights? I would be coming off 2 20amps breakers in a single slot. I relly don't understand what a dpst and spst are (what they do) I am trying to hook up...

T103M is 120Volt timer that can handle all the Christmas lights.
Minimum on-off time 1 hour.
Rotate dial until current time lines up with silver pointer.
Set on-off trippers on dial.
Let's go step by step.

1) T103 has terminals A 1 2 3 4 >> terminals are also called poles
DPST (double pole single throw) and SPST (single pole single throw) are two different ways to wire this particular timer.
T103 timer can be wired numerous ways... but your project is not complicated.
DPST means timer turns off two terminals/poles (double pole) with each click/throw of timer switch (single throw)
SPST means timer turns off one terminal/pole (single pole) with each click/throw of timer switch (single throw)

2) T103 timer is ST single throw, all the lights come on at same time. So this timer is 1 channel.
1 channel timers are either ON or OFF and everything turns on-off at same time.
You cannot stagger on-off times with 1 channel timer.
If you want upstairs and downstairs lights to come ON at different times, you need two timers .. or a 2-channel timer (which is different ballgame).

3) T103 timer has 120Volt clock motor that is connected to terminals A and 1.
Look at timer and you can see small white wires connected to A and 1 terminals that power 125V clock motor.
When wiring this timer, your wires from 20 amp breaker box connect to terminals A and 1.
Black hot wire from breaker must connect to terminal 1
White neutral wire from neutral busbar must connect to terminal A

4) Terminal 1 must be hot so when timer switch clicks ON, it sends power to terminal 2.
Your load wires connect to terminals A and 2
I made simple drawing of SPST option showing how to wire T103 to 3 receptacles.
Fixya downgrades image so it's hard to see.
Hot wire to terminal 1
Load wire to terminal 2
Neutrals on terminal A
To see image larger:

If you want to wire timer for DPST, which is necessary for loads exceeding 2 horsepower (1500 Watts) on each terminal
Notice black jumper wire from terminal 1 to terminal 3
Notice all white neutral wires to terminal A
To see image larger:
I made third image for guy who was wiring high amperage blowers, that show wiring for two T103 timers. Having two timers would let upstairs and downstairs lights come on at different times.

Motor hums then clicks off

Has the motor seemed a little slower in starting than usual? If so then you probably have a weak or defective motor capacitor. Try switching out with a new one. They are inexpensive.Try to turn the motor shaft at rear (under end cap) while it attempts to start. If the motor kicks on then replace capacitor.
