Is there a safety mechanism / cable on Husqvarna LGT2554 that will not allow blades to engage if it runs out of gas while mowing

None. The only safety switch that prevent blades from engaging is the reverse switch but that will just kill the engine.

It is more likely that the deck drive belt has came off only of the pulleys.

Mower cranks but when you engage blades the mower

Safety switch malfunction or something on the deck is locked up. The seat must be depressed & the mower in neutral or forward. No weight on the seat or placing it in reverse will kill the engine on most of them.

It may have a safety lock on it causing you to not use the blades in reverse. My 07 craftsman has that safety feature.

Craftsman ZTS 7500 dies when engage blades or when engage transmission

check the "kill switch" they are usually located in the seating area. it senses for pressure or seat angle and will kill the mower if nobody is sitting on the mower. Good Luck

When in reverse the mower shuts off.

This is a safety feature on your mower
When you put the machine in reverse there
is a ground circuit that contacts the shifter and
kills the engine
Look down by the shifter you can see a bright strip of metal that will contact when the machine is shifted in to reverse

PTO red light switch is on when PTO isn't, so engine won't start

Mitch...the reverse safety switch, I beieve, is designed to kill both the motor and the blades if you don't use the override button prior to trying to mow in reverse. Since I don't know the make or model of your tractor, your not wise to reverse mow unless the override switch is engaged....hope this helps..

Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver

I have 16 hp Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine.

It may think you are in reverse and is killing the motor to keep you from backing up with the blade running. Look for switch that is telling it when you are in reverse, maybe it is stuck with grass or other debris. another possibility is that the blades are jammed and they are stalliing the motor. Mines stalls easily when cold.
