Sorry didnt realize I shouldnt have accepted. Should the OS CD have come with the Computer? Problem is, I have a few files on the computer that are extremely important. I cannot afford to lose those. I also had taken the computer in a few months ago for a problem and I had them reboot windows XP. and everything after that seemed updated, and different that what I had before. If I can find the CD, am I going to lose my files and data because two different discs will probably be used? Its my wifes computer, and she doesnt know where the OS CD is. I cant even get windows to load, so how can I possibly transfer files to either a flash drive or external HD. At this point, with the files being so important, would I be better off taking the comp into the same repair shop

Haven't you gone through the instructions provided by fixya.com. It a bit of trouble for me to search you back. Once on fixya you shall never accept solution in advance. As soon as you accept the solution that particular window through which we can communicate is closed. Here is the new window which i created for you to communicate with me is. For any further clarifications you can comment using this link.

As far as your assumption on your HDD failure was concerned was somewhat correct not completely. Your HDD is having bad sectors so you require to format it now. The blue screen which you are getting at present is known as blue screen of death i.e. your current operating system has crashed. In order to revive your HDD you require your Operating system CD.

    1. First I'd like you to try a repair option on your HDD. Just insert the bootable OS CD inside your CD drive and let it boot through CD when you are prompted to hit any key just hit it. let the follow the software and when first time you get the repair option don't press 'R' key just press enter within seconds you will get the second chance to press 'R' just hit it and let the windows do whatever it is doing. If this works out you will not loose any data or anything.

    2. If during repair once more you are getting that blue screen of death (50% chance) then you will have to format your c drive or whichever drive you are using. just follow the above proceedure and this time don't hit R simply press enter and enter don't forget to format your partition. you should select slow ntfs format option. Once your operating system is loaded you will be required to install all your softwares back and whatever data you were having in your CD drive will be lost.

If in doubt at any time just comment back using the above link.

Dell inspiron 5150 laptop, reset admin. password.

Restart your laptop and keep tapping F8 key the moment you see something on the screen. You will get a black screen with some options written in white. Select the option Safe mode and then you can create a new user with admin rights. Or else at the windows login screen press and hold ctrl and alt key and tap delete key twice and then it will take you to a login screen. Dont put any password there just hit enter. And you will be able to login with admin rights.

Thanks
Deepak

Inspiron 1420 is not booting to windows

Hi,
Re-boot, Keep tapping F8 until you get to a black screen, last known good is there, choose this, leave it to run,

or try again re-boot, choosing safe mode this time, if/when it boots, then a system restore in safe mode, go back in time.

If still no good, Your O/S disc is now needed,
boot with disc, go for a repair of the install,
Let it run it's course,
re-boot.

Dell 1200 Inspiron OS boot problem

Two things you should try to resolve this issue: -

  • Check that the FN button on the keyboard to switch from the Laptop monitor to external monitor has not been enabled - these are usually 3 state switches (Laptop screen ON, External screen ON, Both ON) it is really easy to accidentally hit this without realizing.
  • If this works there is no need to try the second option.
OR
  • Try booting to safe mode - as the laptop boots up and you see the Bios summary screen depress the F8 button and you should receive a screen containing several options.
  • Select the option to Boot to safe mode.
  • If the laptop boots up ok then login to XP, don't be alarmed at the change in screen resolution.
  • Right-click My Computer on the desktop and select Properties - Hardware - Device manager
  • In the tree-view containing the different hardware select Display Adapters you should see your graphics card in there
  • Right-click and select Scan for Hardware Changes if it is ok the close and reboot as normal
  • If there is a problem here it implies the driver is somehow corrupted and may need re-installing from the disk that came with the laptop.
