I have a Makita g3500r generator and I need to find out the spring setup for the governor and carb.

Governor to speed control and carb throttle control and also the idle control spring setup please someone screwed with this thing and didn't put everything back together right. any kind of diagram would be great or instruction.

Starting at the carb throttle shaft, your linkage rod (with tiny spring wrapped around it) should be connected directly to the governor's arm. If there's more than one hole in the arm, connect the rod in the upper-most hole.
Now, at the base of the governor's arm is another hole (possibly on a tab jutting from the arm). The main governor spring should be hooked in this hole and then back to the sliding throttle control that moves when the lever on the dash is moved. (This one definitely has a tab and hole.)

The choke cable end hooks directly on the choke shaft and it has intuitive movement. Verify that the choke butterfly closes and opens relative to the cable control on the tractor's dash.

To insure that we only do this procedure ONCE, and we get it right the first time, let's set the internal governor to base-line at this time.

With everything bolted back up, move the throttle control lever on the tractor's dash to full throttle. Then get a 3/8 wrench and a slotted screwdriver and locate the round governor shaft coming out of the engine block. The governor arm attaches to this with a clamping-bolt. You will notice that the round shaft is slotted for a screwdriver as well.
Loosen the clamping bolt slightly with your 3/8 wrench, insert your screwdriver and rotate the round shaft clockwise until it stops. (It has VERY little travel, so turn it both ways to verify that your are at FULL clockwise position.)
Hold screwdriver there and move the governor's arm in the same (clockwise) direction until the carb's throttle is set to WIDE OPEN throttle. Still holding the screwdriver clockwise, retighten the clamping bolt with the wrench.
Next, move the throttle lever on the dash of the tractor to idle and back to full several times and observe the carb's throttle shaft, it should come down from full throttle to idle and back again freely.

Start the engine and be prepared to shut it off if it over-revs.
If it doesn't over-rev, your base-line settings are correct.

By bending the tab on the sliding throttle control (the one that has the main spring attached) you can now increase or decrease spring tension and change top speed of the engine. Do this in small increments and if you have a tachometer for single cylinder's set top speed to 3400-3600 RPM.

Sorry this is lengthy, but as mentioned above, we only want to do this once.

Governor linkage


There are two main types of governor and the centrifugal type tends to be reserved for heavier stationary type engines. Most portable lightweight appliances use a vane-type governor where a vane is placed adjacent to the cooling fan so the faster the engine revs the more air is moved and the more the vane will move against it's restraining spring.

There is a spring biasing the throttle to fully open and this spring is connected to the throttle or speed control lever.
There is a link connecting the throttle to the vane. After starting the engine speed will rise until the governor vane moves under the rush of cooling air forcing the throttle butterfly to close against the spring pressure until the vane pressure and the spring pressure are equal and therefore a constant engine speed is achieved.

Moving the speed control lever to increase speed tensions the spring and opens the butterfly causing the engine speed to rise until the vane force again equals the spring pressure.

This is a fairly basic but very common type. There are variations using two or three springs but the principle remains the same.

Need adjustment procedure and breakdown of governor.


check that you have the governor control rod on the butterfly lever of the carby connected correctly
it appears that the lever is at full throttle when you connected it and so the governor cannot pull it back to correct speed
if correct the throttle will be at full speed when stopped but will move with the go lever to slow when you manually push the gov lever

Generator starts with 1 pull and runs 5 seconds then shuts off. Carb is clean inside.


Must be something wrong with the governor or the links near the carb. Check the springs and linkages. These are usually at fault. If thereafter you still don't find something, must be the jets on the carb. One of it maybe a little dirty.

Can I change a 10hp generator motor with an automatic throttle to a manual throttle?


Yes, you will be able to control the throttle. Look for a lever that pulls on the governor spring. On some generators, the governor spring attaches to an arm with adjustment screw and locknut or metal tab that bends into position. All that you need do is to pull on the governor spring to increase rpm. The governor spring pulls on the governor arm that is attached to the fly weight governor inside the engine. The fly weight is turned by the cam gear in most cases and the force that it produces is constantly trying to close the throttle. The governor spring provides the counter force to open the throttle. Without the governor, the engine can over rev. Good luck with your project.

Normally when you move the throttle control on the handle, all that is happening is that governor spring tension is increasing or decreasing pull on the linkage /governor arm. With engine off and plug wire removed, look for a small shaft coming out of the engine with an arm attached. Attached to the small arm will be linkage to the throttle on carb.. So when you move the throttle on the carb with your finger the arm moves also. There should be spring connected to opposite side of governor arm connected to throttle control at the handle or small lever or metal tab. When you incease pull on the spring, the engine will speed-up. Adjust as needed. Good luck

It runs wide open all the time im wondering where idler arm setting is at


It sounds like the govenor spring has become disconnected or the clamp on the governor shaft has become loose and allowed the linkage to get out of adjustment. If problem has occurred suddenly it could mean the governor gear assembly inside the engine has broken and means the engine will need to be dismantrel to replace the governor gear assembly.
Check throttle linkage to see if spring is attached at both ends, one end on the throttle linkage and the other at the fixed point on the engine or to the end of the speed control lever. With engine stopped the spring should hold the throttle wide open and hand pressure on the linkage shoud be all that is needed to move throttle shaft closed to the idle position with no binding in the movement of the linkage.
If spring is OK and while engine is running, linkage should be able to be be moved to bring engine back to idle. If porblem has occurred gradually, then linkage will need re-adjusting. Loosen adjusting clamp on governor shaft, then holding linkage in wide open throttle position rotate shaft as far as it will go in the opposite direction to that requred to close throttle to idle . Re-tighten clamp.

The engine on your generator is also used for other applications some of which require an adjustable  throttle control. On a generator the engine must turn about 3600 rpm to obtain proper output of voltage and cycles. Upon further inspection of your throttle/governor you will probably find an adjustment consisting of a screw, nut or a tab on one end of the governor spring that can be reset for proper engine speed. (tab can be bent for more or less tension on spring) To check present governor setting, use a volt meter that has frequency setting. Make sure that generator is set to about 60 hz. (3600rpm) Good luck with your generator.

Porter Cable 5500w generator (10hp BS) will not regulate speed.


While attending college I worked at a tool rental center and learned a great deal about matching generators to customer requirements and troubleshooting customer owned units. There are simple tests that you can perform, however, first some info on what to expect from a generator. Most generators are overrated and under powered. You should only expect to get about 60 - 75% of rating. Example, a commercial honda 5000w generator has an 11hp motor that can only produce about 9.5 hp at 3600 rpm. If a customer needed 5000w of power, we would rent them an 8000w generator because as the generator is loaded to max the voltage will drop. You generator will probably only provide steady voltage ex. 115v at 60 cycles to about 3500w then voltage will begin to drop. New generators have automatic voltage regulator that varies the power to the armature increasing/decreasing the power of the magnet. These voltage regulators suffer a high failure rate and are expensive. If your generator is not giving you 3500 watt at 115v 60 cycles your engine may have a few problems and your power generator end may need tweaking. (I would not expect to achieve 5500w at 115v with briggs 10hp) .
The governor is about 2 inches in diameter and turns off the cam gear inside the engine. It is flyball type with two or three small arms that react to rpm. The faster the engine turns, more force is applied to the governor arm to reduce engine speed. Easy to test, with engine running use finger pressure against the arm to increase speed and you should feel a greater resistance as the engine speed increases. Another simple test, remove air filter to expose butterfly inside the carb. Move the governor arm and check that the butterfly opens fully. If it does not open fully linkage and governor is not set correctly. Next, start engine and load generator up to max and check that butterfly opens to full as the load increases. When the butterfly opens all the way under load the engine is at max. Add up the wattage of all the tools/appliances you used to load the engine to get an idea of max load . Lets assume that the shop adjusted the governor properly, if the governor was not working the engine would over rev. and damage would occur. As you were told the governor spring controls speed and can be adjusted somewhat by bending tab or adjustment screw. But a review of your generator manual or that series of briggs engine will show that there are several governor springs available and different placement holes on the governor arm to attach the spring that will change the power curve. Pulling on the spring can only do so much, however changing the spring to different gauge /turns/material or differnet location on the governor arm will cause the engine to perform differently. These springs are sold thru briggs dealers by part number for your engine. This would be considered tweaking to get a different power curve.
Now for the generator. Some generators have a capacitor incorporated in the windings. This capacitor must measure within 95% of rating. Remove from circuit for testing. Finally look very carefully at the commutator rings for any evidence of brush bounce. If the brushes do not perfectly seat you will lose power. If your generator is brushless you can only hope that the diodes are within spec. because it is too difficult to test them. They also must be removed to test. Finally if your generator has an automatic voltage regulator the only test would be to replace with a known good part. At the rental center we stocked spare parts so that we could quickly find fault. There is soo much to learn and the life too short. I hope this helps good luck, please email your questions.

I've never been a big fan of the 180 OH family of engines in these things, but here goes.
1 - If the engine will stay running while it surges, close the choke a little at a time and see if it settles down. If it does, there is something amiss in the carb. The carbs on these engines are very picky about tiny bits of dirt. The good news is that they are fairly simple to take apart and clean, the bad news is that lots of the parts are plastic and break easily. At least they aren't too expensive.

2 - I've seen 2 ways to adjust the governed speed on these engines; a spring that connects to the governor arm at one end and a tab bent up from the sheet metal that mounts on top of the engine at the other - bend the tab so the spring is tighter to speed the engine up, and (b) a jam nut and screw mechanism that presses against a lever that pulls on a spring that connects to the governor arm - screw the screw in tighter to raise the engine speed.
Note that in either case the mechanism adjusts the tension in a spring that pulls against the governor arm, this is helpful in finding out where to make the adjustment.
Here in the US we want our 2 pole generators like this to run at 3750 rpm at no load so that we get very close to 3600 rpm at load. If you're using a DMM to measure the output of the generator in Hz, you want 61.5 at no load.

If nothing you can do with the choke makes the surge go away, you might have a misadjusted governor. The Tecumseh service manual has a great procedure for making this adjustment, essentially what you do is loosen the retaining nut on the governor arm, twist the governor shaft to its minimum speed position, then hold the throttle assembly at the idle stop and tighten the governor arm jam nut. Always keep a finger near the kill switch when running the engine the first time after this procedure, it's easy to mess up and have a runaway engine.
