When the vehicle is off and stereo is off the speakers are making loud popping and banging noises all the time over the last week? when the vehicle is running and stereo on no popping noises

This can be tricky; there are several things that might cause this 'phantom' problem. You did not state if you have an alarm system. The alarm may be tied into your speakers and/or linked to the stereo itself. I would not initially suspect a ground issue since the stereo works well while powered. I would suspect a power feed issue. This can be tested by removing the fuse for the stereo and seeing if the issue continues. If the problem stops, the source may be internal to the stereo and you may need to get an aftermarket stereo - or pull the fuse every time you stop ( sucky solution, I know!) . I think this may be an issue resolved by a reputable stereo shop. Possibly a strategically placed Diode may solve the problem - a hands on diagnostic is certainly called for. You did not mention if the problem decreases or stops overnight. I would think this can cause your battery to drain over an extended period of time - and ruin the speakers too, if they're not affected already. I would try contacting the Dealer first and, as this problem has gone unresolved for so long, see if you can get them to replace the stereo or at the least pay the stereo shop to fix it.
best of luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Last night I noticed the stereo was not illuminated and would not turn on. Today the car is completely dead, no power locks, no clicks on ignition. original stereo (not aftermarket) and this is first...

How old is the batttery? Most car batteries only last 4-5 years. I would check the date on the battery, and if it is around that old replace the battery first. If the battery voltage ever drops below 9 volts the computers can get a bit screwy.

How do I remove stereo in 2009 Santa fe?

Remove negative battery lead

Pry plastic 'wood' trim off from l/h side of steering column (assuming r/h drive car) ensuring light pressure so as not to mark.

Contrinue to pry off trim towards stereo, last remaining clip on far side of car will not come off

Open top box above stereo, remove 2 black screws and remove unit.

Unscrew aircon/heater controls (2 screws either side), withdraw.

Working upwards, remove 2 fascia screws and withdraw unclipping wiring.

Reveals 4x silver screws holding in stereo unit. Withdraw unit, 1x manufacturer loom plug on reverse and 1x aerial plug.

The yellow wire on the power plug on a car stereo came unplugged and we are not sure if it goes in the last plug in or next to last

you should have a plug with a red wire and a black wire and possiblely a blue and a blue with a white tracer, most cars have these with the yellow wire all in one section of a plug or a separate plug for just the power side of the stereo
