Question about Euro-Pro Dressmaker 998B

Open Question

I have a dressmaker SS-2402--The fabric won't feed through!

My Mom bought the dressmaker machine at a thrift store. It's in mint condition. I was able to thread it fine, I believe, but no matter how I adjust the pressure bar cap, or the drop feed nobs, the feeder won't work. HELP!!! Am I forgetting something or doing something wrong? I'd really love to be able to use this machine!

The manual has terrible descriptions and pictures. Maybe I'm not threading it properly?? Could this make it not feed?? Please advise!

Do feed dogs were out

They will wear over time, especially if they are allowed to stitch with full contact to the base of the presser foot (in absence of fabric). (I have an older machine picked up at the thrift store that has permanent gouging to the base of the presser foot because the machine was run without fabric between it and the feed dogs.) Feed dogs also can become clogged with debris--dirt, lint, oil, etc. In addition, feed dogs may need to be adjusted in height if they don't rise above the needle plate to contact the presser foot--this should be done by a professional. Something else to check is if your machine has a presser foot pressure adjustment feature. Most new machines have this function. Older machines also may have it internally although the manufacturers weren't very good about letting users know since they didn't want users making mechanical adjustments to their machines. On some older machines, it is a vertical projection on the top left of the machine that is spring loaded. Pressing it down will gradually increase the pressure on the presser foot. HOWEVER, when using this adjustment, it should be released completely (press down on the outer ring of the projection) when finished sewing or when not used regularly as the spring collapses over time and will no longer work efficiently. Same thing with the presser foot lever--the presser foot should be stored in the lowered position with a soft cloth (scrap fabric) between it and the feed dogs. I've seen a lot of older machines at the thrift store with the presser foot in the "up" position. This is a no-no if you want to keep your machine at its best working condition.

Hello, I have a very old but wonderful Pfaff 260 automatic and the feed seems to be going backwards but is not pulling the fabric at all?

First, verify that the stitch length is set high enough that the feed dogs should be pulling the fabric to create a stitch.

If you have not recently oiled the machine, the feed dog mechanism may be stuck due to old oil that has solidified. Pick up some liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube. While gently rocking the handwheel, apply a couple drops everywhere that metal rubs against metal. Do NOT oil rubber, leather, or synthetic parts!!! Don't forget to hit the spots under the sewing surface, ie the feed dogs, bobbin area, etc. Also, move the levers and selectors and hit those with a couple drops of oil. If things are still a bit sluggish, you can apply hot air from a handheld hairdryer at the interior of the machine. The heat will help loosen things.

P.S.--I picked up a frozen Pfaff 260 at the thrift store for $25. Used the above method to get things loose and now it sews beautifully!!!
