No you cannot, the transformer will work for a while and it will get very hot and cound catch fire. You should get a transformer at least 100 W to 120 W. It can be an auto transformer which is not so bulky as an isolating transformer, but be careful how you wire it up.

Also have look on the machine it self to see how many watts in consumes. The number on the pedal may be the handling capacity of the pedal control.

I have a Brother 4234D Overlocker/Serger. The power cord - foot pedal cord has one plug into the machine and then the two cords coming from that. One goes to the power plug and foot pedal.

I believe it is two wires. The cord could be cut and extended any reasonable length so long it is done in accordance with requured regulations.

Basically, whatever materials and method you use to extend the cable must meet the same specifications and safety requirements of the original.

I guess that's why it's never a good idea to lend out our favorite machines.

Perhaps the machine needs a good cleaning and oiling. Most likely, the borrower did not give it needed TLC (Sergers generally require more frequent maintenance due to the lint generated, multiple moving parts, and speed.) It may be good to ask the advice of a service technician. It could be something really easy that a thorough clean, oil, and adjustment would resolve or something more complicated and expensive such as replacing broken parts. At least some professional advice will help you decide how to move forward.

Janome Overlocker has power to the light but when I press the pedal nothing happens. Any suggestions to resolve this issue?

can you hear the engine humming when you plug it in? if so, that eliminates electrical supply to the engine.

If you manually turn the flywheel towards you does the loopers and needles move through a stitch sequence? If yes, then its not the main drive gears inside. If there is no movement or if a looper just "flops" around, you've got an internal drive problem, probably time to take it to a technician.

Lastly, check that the looper cover and side cover are fully closed as they will have safetly cutouts on the doors that prevent the machine from operating when the door is still not fully closed.
