The cone filter if put on right should collect the dirt, the tabs shoud be on the edge so when you put the top on, it keeps it in place. Wish I could help more, guess I would have to see it to figure it out. Here is a pic. of the top part, are all filters ok? There is one under the round card-board besides the one at the bottom of the motor. #18 is the filter.

SOURCE: my eureka 2961avz bagless vacuum has no suction

Usually clogs are in the dirt inlet by the brush roll, or in the hose. Take the hose off from the bottom and see if there is suction, if not, then the hose is clogged. If suction there, then it is lower. Also is the brush roll turning, if not, that could be your problem.

SOURCE: vacuum is sucking but dirt is just shooting out behind the vacuum

I bought this same vacuum and have all the same problems. It seems it is always the filter but if it out and use the air hose and clean it it really really well then it sucks really well it will pick up anything but who wants to always do this. As one person asked about the bare floors not working well I read on another blog that company knows it does not work well on barefloors but has failed to metion this. One more thing besides the clog always being in the back were the hose connects I always find a clog in the yellow part above the canister. I always pull out so much crap there. Oh sorry one more thing I found that helped with the power was that I completely took the duster part completely off and just use the hose. Hope you have better luck than I do or did..

SOURCE: dirt devil purpose for pets vacuum quit working

The motor overheats from the filter being clogged underneath the canister or the canister or both are clogged-without the air flow the motor overheats and shuts off as a precautionary measure.By letting the motor cool off it will start again but will turn off shortly if the filters are not properly cleaned.Hope this helps everyone.

If the filter is clogged would it quit working

Hi there! If the filter is clogged this will cause the vacuum to lose suction and possibly shut-off. Below are instructions to checking and cleaning your filters.

1. Remove the dirt cup. Twist off the dirt cup lid.
2. Remove the filter cartridge from dirt cup.
3. Separate the foam and cartridge filters. Wash foam filter under running. Allow 24 hours to air dry outside the vacuum.
4. Tap the excess dirt out of Hepa filter. Hepa filter may also be washed. Allow 24 hours to air dry.
5. Check the secondary filter by removing the filter cover from base. Rinse the foam filter under running water until it runs clear. Allow 24 hours to air dry.
6. The red baffle tube inside of the dirt cup is apart of the filtration of the vacuum and needs to be cleaned as well. Twist out the baffle tube by turning 1/4 turn clockwise. Remove any hair or debris wrapped around baffle tube. Baffle tube can be rinsed if needed. Allow to dry thoroughly.

If the filters are too dirty they may need to be replaced. With regular maintenance the filters should be replaced about once a year. Follow the links below to order replacement filters for your UH20020.

Hope this helps!

Why does my dirt devil swerve get really hot?

Hello! Sounds like your vacuum may be overheating. This is usually caused by either a clog or a filter that needs to be cleaned. Please try the steps below to get your vacuum back up and running.

1. Remove the hose from both ends by pressing the release buttons.
2. Use a broom stick or something similar to gently loosen and remove any clogs from the hose.
3. Remove the nozzle from the cleaner by pressing the release button and pulling the nozzle from the body.
4. Use a wooden spoon or something similar to loosen up and remove any clogs from the nozzle or the lower tube.
5. Remove the dirt cup. Lift open the lid to the dirt cup.
6. Remove the filter from dirt cup. Remove the filter frame from dirt cup. Hold filter under running water to rinse. Allow 24 hours to air dry before replacing.
7. Check the exhaust filter by twisting off the filter cover.
8. If dirty, the exhaust filter can be washed as well. Hold filter under running water to rinse. Allow 24 hours to air dry.

This should stop the vacuum from overheating. If not please reach out to us here on Fixya, Facebook.com/dirtdevil or Twitter @DirtDevil. Thanks!

I cleaned my filter and forgot how to put it back on, how?

Hi there! To return the air director back into the dirt cup, rotate 1/4 turn clockwise to lock into place. To replace the pleated filter. Return filter cartridge to base of cleaner. Click button on filter cover back into place to lock filter cartridge in base of cleaner. Hope this helps! I have also included a link to the instruction manual for reference if needed. Not familiar with your vacuum, but there are at least TWO filters and two seals in it, according to the illustrated parts breakdown above. Assuming the HEPA filter is number A23 (final filter) in the above url, it sounds like you've got a full cartridge filter/dirt cup A29, blocking airflow through the vacuum. There is also a prefilter, A55 that could be clogged. The suction fan is usually directly attached to the motor, such that if the motor turns on, the fan should be working. Of course a plastic fan that has been used to chew up wood chips might be in tatters, but the fan should be in serviceable condition. Look at the IPB shown above and locate ALL filters, dirt cups, etc. and ensure that they are not clogged with dirt. If you can, remove the filters, close up the unit and turn the unit on to check the airflow, which not only moves the dirt into the dirtcup, but also cools the motor. Anything that obstructs airflow will generally raise the motor temperature and the exhausted air. I believe you'll find a full A29 filter.Good Luck

Just bought this Hoover Fusion vaccum used, cleaned it up, checked belt and filter, turned it on and is extremely loud, almost like a scream. Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix?

Loud noises from this model are caused by dirt build up on the suction fan mounted directly to the motor. Under the dirt cup there is a filter screen that should have a foam filter insert, when not used or cleaned properly allows dirt to get into the motor. Cleaning is the best option. Although if you are inclined, you can take it apart or take it to your local deaLer.

Motor housing is hot

This model has 2 side filters, check and clean those. Be aware that this is a quick clean vac, not to be used for extended periods of time to replace a full size upright. clean the inside filter in the dirt cup.

Roomba dirt in filter but NOT in bin

possibly the vacuum fan is plugged up or not spinning fast enough to pick up heavier items. disassemble the back canister and clean the fan chamber.(THis is one area of regular maintenance). if it is all clean then try to replace the motor. The other possiblity... You have one damn clean house. :)

My Oreck XL is very dirty inside on fan and the motor runs very loud. It is not clogged.

These units are called dirty air units because the dirt literraly runs thru the fan attached to the motor and is blown into the bag. Most newer vacuums are called clean air because the filter bag is in the path, and the dirt is sucked into the bag, never reaches the fan or motor.

I'd say if it is that dirty, may be a fire hazard, and you may have worn out the seals on the part down at base that pivots to a point that replacement is necessary.

(I'd blow out the dust and keep using if it was me, and then check again in a few weeks, before I replaced. But I like living dangerous.)

Shutting off due to overheating

The foam style filters they sent you go in the top of the vaccume above the canister. There is a sticker in the back of the canister compartment indicating an orange lever in the top of that compartment. This releases a plastic retainer with the foam filter in it. Mine was so caked with dirt after 1 year of use it took a while to clean it up. I thought the vaccume was done for in only a year.
