Approximately 24 oz. Recheck the level you may have to add a little more. To much oil will blow in to the air filter if to full and cause smoking.

Dirty fuel in the tank, breather in the filler cap blocked, or partly blocked main jet in the carb, if there is a fuel solinoid on the base of the carb check its function by removing, when the ignition is turned on the plunger should retract into its housing,

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

Weed eater 22" mower with

Hi stnstomper...

Look under the mower for a square plug or allen wrench type plug, this will be your oil drain for the motor.
Some of Briggs & Stratton motors do not have an oil drain plug...
If you do not have an oil drain plug then you will have to run the mower to get it warm, then remove the oil fill plug and tip the mower towards the oil fill plug to drain out the oil thru the fill plug hole.

It sounds like the oil was filled way too much and was kicked around violently as you started it, usually the oil filler plug will show full with only an inch or less showwing on the dip stick which is part of the plug. You have to screw it in and take it out to get the right measurement. Also cold weather may be making your oil very thick if it is a multi weight 20-50W oil for trucks, it is super thick when starting up. I would try a light oil like 10-30 if allowed in your manual, keeping in mind this motor always travells 3500 rpm where a truck or car would only be doing 700 rpm when cold started. For very cold startup conditions I would use Syntec 5-30W 100% synthetic oil (it's about five times more expensive than most) which I use in a 2002 VW diesel Jetta turbo with great results so far and it still gets 65 mpg after 10 years driving!

Double check that the head bolts are properly torqued. There is a crankcase breather if stuck open could be drawing oil into the intake, and there is a valve stem seal on each intake valve that could be leaking. All this is assuming that the oil level is not over full. They will smoke like a banshee if they have to much oil in them.

Oil appearing at exhaust, smokey, briggs and stratton lawm mower.

You will need to replace or clean the air filter, and probably the spark plug. Do not operate the mower for some hours to allow the oil drain (inside the engine). Check oil level and fill it if necessary. Some oil remaining in the exhaust should be burnt next time the lawnmower operates. You will see smoke at the beginning, that will be normal (burnt oil). Hope this helps!

Oil in air breather

sounds like you have too much oil in the engine (should normally be around 500-600ml when there is too much oil, it gets past the piston rings and pushes it through to the head.
