SOURCE: Briggs & Straton 20 HP, two cilinder engine idle speed

Surging is usually caused by a lean condition You can try to turn the mixture screw ccw about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. If this does not solve the problem your carb will have to be removed, cleaned thoroughly, and reinstalled.

SOURCE: no spark 10 hp briggs+straton

Remove the kill wire from the the back of the ignition module and test to see if you then have spark. If you have spark you would have a bad ground but if you still do not have spark then you may have a bad ignition module.

SOURCE: how do you adjust the idle on the Coleman 6250 Generator

There are many different models of Briggs used however simple methed is to find the governor shaft. Attached to the small shaft will be a lever with the governor spring and linkage that connects to the throttle. One end of the governor spring attaches to the lever and other is attached to either an adjustment screw with locknut or metal tab that can be bent. Increasing the pull of the governor spring on the lever will cause the engine rpm to increase. Bend the tab to allow for greater pull or adjusting the bolt with locknut. Make sure that the engine is not turning much more than 3600 rpm. Use a digital meter with Hz setting to set the output cycles at 60. When set at 60 cycles the engine should be turning about 3600 rpm which is where the engine develops max power.

How do you adjust valves

Check valve clearance while the engine
is cold.

1. Turn crankshaft counterclockwise until
piston is at top dead center on the
compression stroke. This prevents the
compression release from holding the
valves open.
2. Insert a narrow screwdriver or rod into the
spark plug hole as a gauge, then slowly
turn crankshaft counterclockwise until the
piston has moved down the bore by 1/4"
(6mm).
3. Using a feeler gauge, adjust
rocker nut to obtain the clearance.
4. Hold rocker nut and tighten the rocker ball
setscrew to the torque valve.
5. Check clearance again and re-adjust, if
necessary.
6. Repeat for other valve.
7. If twin cylinder repeat the above for the other cylinder.

NOTE: On some models, the nut and setscrew
are positioned above the push rod ends.

I have a briggs &straton intek 26 hp and the compresion seems to be not releasing.what can i do?

If the valves are adjusted too loose, the compression release will not work, and will make starting the engine difficult. I believe the clearance is supposed to be .005". If the clearance is too large, the 'bump' on the cam will not move the valve off its seat when cranked slowly, and compression will make the engine hard to crank over.

If ther is not enough gravity feed from the tank ( fuel tank low in the tractor ) it will not allow the fuel to flow on gradients, try raising the tank with spacers under the fixings of the tank

Remove the top engine cover and check that the aluminum flywheel key is not sheared, then remove the valve cover and ADJUST the 2 overhead valves. They have to be adjusted periodically on ALL small engines with overhead valves.

Briggs straton ohv on tiller , govener will not work, runs at high speed all the time, starter rope has become extremely hard to pull, will not spin engine.

The hard to pull, will not spin the engine issue could be because you need a valve adjustment. A valve adjustment is critical because it enables the built-in compression release on the Briggs OHV engine to function correctly and enable an easy start; plus of course, smoother running. Remove the valve cover and adjust those valves at 1/4" down past TDC on the power stroke. You WILL see a difference in the engine once you do the adjustment.. Here is a Briggs spec chart which has those values for their engines. Yours should be listed in the OHV engine section.
