Question about Craftsman Garden
My craftsman 19 hp lawn tractor with a Briggs and Stratton engine that is 3 years old and just out of warranty won't start. It will start to crank but won't go all the way around, then backfires through the carb. I have checked the battery, for too much oil, flooding, had the flywheel off to inspect it and the key/keyway, adjusted the valves, probably left out other things. I did get it to start once since this happened by having my wife hold the key while I forced it through the cycle turning the flywheel by hand and it ran good with no noticeable problems but I have not since been able to get it to start like that again. It will just go through that stroke then backfire and/or stop before it can go through another stroke. If I adjust the valves too loose it might go through 2-3 strokes but will backfire each time and not start. I am lost for a reason this has happened. I used it one day for a few hours and went to move it the next and it has been like this ever since. Thanks, Bill
Sounds like the automatic compression release on the cam has gone bad.
