SOURCE: have a designer 1 and
The floppy disk drives are getting quite old.
They work by moving a small magnetic coil over the disk similar to the needle on a record player. The magnetic coil (known as a "read/write head") must be very close to the disk to read the data. Unfortunately, dust tends to gather under the read/write head and lifts it up away from the disk.
A simple thing to try is spray some "canned air" into the drive unit. This will hopefully blow the dust ball off the read/write head. Canned air is available at target, walmart and office supply stores near the electronic departments usually. When you use this method, the canned air is not really just air, and it causes the surface it is sprayed on to get cold. This can cause some condensation (liquid water) to form on the sprayed surfaces. Allow the sprayed surfaces to warm to room temperature and water to evaporate before putting your disk in. It should take less than 15 minutes. If any water is present, it will cause read/write errors and possibly damage your disk too. Take your time and try a couple of sprays. If you can get the disk drive open on the sewing machine, you might be able to simply pull the dust ball off of the read/write head. Be careful not to bend it - it is very delicate piece of sheet metal. Any bend could cause the disk to scratch. Don't be afraid to touch it, just be careful when you do touch it.
There could be other issues associated with the computer on the sewing machine, the cables from the disk drive to the computer (all inside the machine). We can get into that if needed. Let me know if the can of air cleans things out.
