Yes you can plug a 15 amp to a 20 amp, but not the other way around, as long as your drawing less current (amps) then the plug is rated for you all set.

I plugged a 30 amp power supply cord from an rv to a 15 amp house outlet to run a/c to rv . gfci tripped and wont reset. damaged gfci or something else?

A GFI outlet works independently of sensing an overload condition. Overloads are dealt with by the circuit breaker or fuse in your electrical panel. The GFI simply compares the current on the hot terminal (black or red wire) with the current on the neutral terminal (white or gray wire) and interrupts the current if there is more than 5mA (0.005 Amps) difference between the two.

Remove the load - in this case the RV plug - from the GFI outlet and attempt a reset. Make sure you're pressing the RESET button and not the TEST button. If it resets - you're all set. Reconnect the RV plug to a different outlet - preferably NOT a GFI type.

If it still wont reset, it is important to know that GFI outlets can be wired in such a way that any circuit extended to other outlets (lights, too) via the LOAD terminal screws will also be protected by the GFI. We need to be sure that there wasn't something else causing the fault. Check other nearby outlets for functionality. Remove plugs from any outlet found not working and attempt to reset again.

If it will not reset - it is possible that the internal sensing circuitry has been damaged due to such a large amount of current trying to pass. In this case, replacing the GFI outlet will be needed.

Why is the GFCI outlet getting power, but still not working?

GFCI's have 4 terminals. 2 marked Load, 2 marked Line. The black and white wires from the power supply MUST be connected to the LINE terminals. The load terminals is where you connect the outgoing circuit (i.e. plug, light etc). Anything connected to the load terminals will be controlled by the GFCI, so when it trips everything on that circuit will go off until you rest it. The other light/switch cannot be connected to the GFI if you want the switch to control it separately.

Can I install on a 20 amp circuit with a 15 amp GFCI plug? The unit says 120 v 6 amp max

Jan 2013
1) Yes. With 6 amps.
It is not purely code, but generally not dangerous.
Most household outlets and switches sold at home center are actually rated 15 amp, and should be on a 15 amp breaker. just don't overload.

2) However if you are running close-to or higher amps than 15 amps, such as space heater (volts x amps = watts), then I would suggest installing 20 amp arc-fault breaker, and protect whole circuit.

Can it be put on a timer so it won't come on so often

Yes.
If spa plugs into ordinary outlet, then choose heavy-duty outdoor timer. Use P1261 with GFCI or P1121 without GFCI.
If outlet already has GFCI, do not use two GFCIs

If spa is hard-wired, then install T101 for 120volt, or T104 for 240Volt

Dream Maker spa GFCI plug was all corroded. I cut off the standard plug that was corroded and installed an industrial grade 120VAC plug with the proper polarity. Plugged the spa back into the GFCI outlet....

Did you make sure you observed the correct polaity on the cord? The white wire should go to the silver screw on the cord cap. The black wire should go to the gold terminal (brass) and the Green wire should go to the Green screw. If the plug was corroded, is it possible that the GFCI is also corroded? They aren't that expensive and you could replace the GFCI yourself if you're sure you can locate the circuit breaker and turn it off.

I have an electrical circuit in my home that consists of five outlets serving 2 and 1/2 baths, and one of which is a 20 AMP GFCI. The GFCI needed to be reset almost daily until it could no longer be reset....

They put the GFI in line at the front, all the other plugs run off it. One of the other plugs, has lost ground, has lost neutral, a simple plug in tester will tell you this, find the fault, or,, you have a fluorescent bulb plugged into it. The gfi's are very sensitive, they snap at the drop of the barometer.

GFI on cord trips out.

Probable cause is a single pole gfi opposed to a double pole gfi.
* Do not use a single pole GFCI ON A MULTI WIRE CIRCUIT, IT WILL NUISANCE TRIP IMMEDIATELY
Use a two pole GFCI circuit breaker on such circuits.

Everytime I plug in the power cord, it trips the breaker.

Refrigerators are not designed to run on a GFCI. Try a heavy duty extension cord to the fridge from a outlet that is not GFCI protected. If it still trips you probably have a short circuit in the compressor.
