Sounds like you need to take the carb. apart and clean it. I like to use a Den Tek Brush, (used for cleaning teeth), to clean the small ports in carb. they work great for this job. Make sure to either clean or replace the small screen in thcarb. as well.

SOURCE: Troy-Built TB70SS, 1 year old, will not start even after carb cleaning

check to see that the kill button is not stuck in the contacting position, and if it is, try to get it unstuck. WD40 should help. if it's not, then disconnect the kill wires. now try starting it. if it still doesnt start, then the spark generator is bad. if this is the case, you'll need a new trimmer, or have a small engine mechanic replace the generator. i think its called the coil, not sure at the moment it's 4:00 am for me. anyways, whichever is cheaper is best choice.

SOURCE: How do I clean the fuel line on troy bilt 5hp chipper vac?

unscrew the nut on the bottom of the carburetor and remove the float bowl it must be emptied and cleaned , debree and water gets into the bowl and blocks of fuel flow reinstall the bowl and start, some carbs don't have a float bowl requiring you to remove the gas tank and carb which is a more involved cleaning.

SOURCE: Ryobi 720r weedeater. Starts, stalls, won't start.

When you rebuilt the carb did you remove and replace the welch plugs. If you did not, then that is probably where your problem is. Debris, varnish and corrosion can build up under the welch plugs and the unit will not pass fuel.

Two problems-dont know cause or if related or not. #1 engine backfires, stalls spits hesitate like not getting fuel

This is definitely a carburetor issue... when your rider needs more fuel and air to suffice the engine, it's not getting it. How old is the unit? When is the last time it's had the carburetor removed to he serviced...

Start there....

Troy bilt pony riding mower

spray some carburetor cleaner in the intake and try to start it if it starts for a few seconds the carburetor is dirty and needs cleaned. put a new needle in it they are cheap and will solve your problem. take the spark plug out and try to start it. if it spins over freely and blows gas out the hole it is the needle in the carburetor. you may want to check the valves, they may be out of adjustment causing hard starting.

I accaidenlty put fuel mixed with oil into my small, 26.2 cc, four stroke tiller (Troy-Bilt TB144)...it ran for a while then started smoking real bad...lost power...and now only runs on idle...stalls when...

Drain the fuel, fuel lines and carburetor. Clean the spark plug with a wire brush, replace if unable to clean thoroughly. Remove the muffler to clean deposits out of the spark arrestor. Use proper fuel and you should be good to go.

I hope that you did not run it so long in that condition that you have deposits on the valves, which would require some engine disassembly to fix.

I hope this helps.

I have the same model from Troy-Bilt. I have only had it about 4 or 5 months. Mine has started using a LOT of oil. I noticed a significant increase in temperature compared to my old Husqvarna 2 cycle. Mine does not completely stall, but it does start to sputter when it gets hot. I am going to take mine back to Lowe's where I bought it. So far I am VERY unhappy with the TBP6040.
