Power Surges are really tough to trace down. Sometimes more than one component can be affected. And what funny after the surge an electronic device may work fine an then a year later quit due to the surge had weakened the unit. Most insurance companies realize this. My home was struck I have a 2 year window to take items in to be checked and if it's found a surge was to blame it will be covered. So far 5 electronic switches ( 2 immediately 3 others have failed over the past several months and 1 DW touch panel and 8 months later my TV had 8 caps blown on the power supply. Hope I helped on why an item may have issues later. best to you

My Hp Pavillion dv60000 went through a power surge during a storm.

From the description the power surge went through the power adapter and into the main motherboard, I would have the power supply checked out, if okay! it means the motherboard has been compromised and at this point replace the laptop computer

My mx3414 gateway went dead

There is a 15 pin VGA connector on that model so plug it in to an external monitor or an LCD television and see if you have video or not. If you do, then you need to check the LCD power inverter which converts the AC power from the wall to DC power. Since you had a power surge this would be the most likely trouble spot. If there is no video, the likely culprit is the video card.

Odds are there was a power grid surge (especially given the fact that your son's is dead as well. Typically replacing the Ac adapter (power cord) will fix the problem, the ac adapter is designed to take the blow in the event of a power surge.

Dead mother board

The problem with power surges, or low power (brownouts) causing excessive current draw can cause multiple problems to motherboards. Even if you were to pinpoint and repair one problem that appeared to fix the fault, several other components on the board may have been weakened, and prone to fail.

If you are certain that the power supply is 100% ok, then replace the MB.

The best power protection is to use a UPS.
