Scanner has been working correctly for some years but now has a problem. When I click on HP solution icon, a dialogue box tells me that that there is no device connected. X.P Device manager told me that an HP5500c scanner was connected. I uninstalled the scanner then rebooted. the computer said it detected the scanner and found the driver but still no connection with the icon. I then uninstalled the software(Version Col108661) ,rebooted and then re-intalled.At the end of the re-installation the program does a check and tells me that the device is connected. I still cannot operate the scanner from the computer.

    I have done what you asked.

    I tried to download patches from the website you selected but the dialog boxes told me that this software was not necessary for the scanner I have.I think that in the past they may have been sent to me as an update.

    The computer still will not communicate with the scanner.

    Well, In this case to better isolate the issue I would suggest you to install the scanner on another computer. If it works on the other system then it is issue with the first computer other wise the scanner is at fault.

I cannot scan


If you on windows xp, go to My Computer and in the list of drives and devices you will see your scanner icon. Double click to open the scanner dialogue box. From there simply follow the instructions to complete your scan.

If you are on windows Vista, go to start/all programs/windows photo gallery. When it opens click on file/import from scanner or camera. The dialogue opens for you to select your scanner. The scanner dialogue box opens and simply follow the instructions to complete your scan.

I've had this HP Scanjet 4200c Flatbed Scanner for several years, no problems. Now when I click on the icon a box opens saying: "Can not find your scanner, you may have a scanner connected to you PC but...


There was a problem years ago that was caused by Norton anti-virus with these. The Anti-virus clobbered the firmware in the scanner.

It could be corrected by running a program that restored the scanner. The program was available from HP.

Try to scan using the below steps
1.Click the Start (Windows) icon.
2. Click All Programs.
3. Click Windows Photo Gallery.
4. Click File and then click Import From Scanner or Camera.
5. Click Import.
6. Click Scan.
I
f you are able to scan in this way, you can perform a level two uninstallation.

chage the printer port. START- SETTINGS-PRINTERS & FAXES - right click on the printer icon and goto properties you will get another window. goto port choose the right port

I have an hp c4240 all in one printer scanner and copier. I cannot get it to scan, it will copy and print fine though. It keeps telling me that the USB is not connected but it is. Do you know how I can fix...


Forget the scanning software form HP. This solution below works! At least untill HP do something to solve this. Windows Vista offers a built-in feature, named Windows Photo Gallery, that allows for scanning without using any imaging software. Follow these steps to scan with Windows Photo Gallery.
  1. Make sure that the product is on and that the USB cable is connected correctly.
  2. On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (c01319360.gif ), click Programs , and then click Windows Photo Gallery .
  3. In the Windows Photo Gallery screen, click File and then click Import from Scanner or Camera .
  4. Look for an icon that represents the product.
    • If no icon appears on the screen, go to Solution five: Fully uninstall and reinstall the HP software.
    • If the icon does appear, click the icon and then click Import .
  5. Make any necessary changes to the settings on the Import screen and then click Preview .
  6. If the preview of the scan looks correct, click Scan . The scanned image imports into Windows Photo Gallery.
    • If the scan was successful, use the Windows Photo Gallery wizard to scan instead of using the HP software. To use the HP software, continue to the next solution to continue troubleshooting. However, it is not necessary to do so.

If you’ve recently upgraded to the new Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), and you have a Hewlett Packard scanner or printer/scanner, then you will almost certainly be experiencing problems with starting it.
This affects almost every model of HP Printer (e.g. PSC 2510, PSC 2410, Officejet series) that uses the HP Director software. Hewlett Packard is working on a solution, which is due to an incompatibility with Javascript on the new IE7.
However, we have a workaround for you here! Just follow these very simple steps to get around the problem:
  • After double-clicking on the HP Director icon, nothing appears to happen... the program is starting normally, but it’s hiding.
  • Wait a few seconds, then hold down the ALT key and press the space bar. A small dialogue box will appear.
  • Click on Minimize (you may have to click twice)
  • Voila! the HP Director task will appear in the task bar at the bottom of the screen - click it, and the program will appear and work normally.
MY ADVICE IF THIS IS THE PROBLEM:
Don't install/uninstall IE7 and then use Firefox or some other web compliant browser instead.

How do I print a selection from apage? and how do I print grayscale?


1) Let's assume you have clicked and dragged your mouse to select some text on a page. To print only the selected text, go to File (at the top of the page), then Print. You should then see a dialogue box which gives you the option to print a selection (on my hp printer, it is under 'Page Range').

You can also try the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+P, to bring up the dialogue box.
Don't just click the printer icon you see on the menu, because that will print out the full page using your default settings.

2) You should be able to select grayscale by using the same dialogue box. Click the button marked 'Preferences', then the tab for 'Color' and you should see the grayscale option.

I don't know your printer model so the options may be slightly different for you, but hope this helps you get started.

start your machine in safe mode and if you have any antivirus installed in it and is updated then scan it , your laptop is infected with virus . so scan it
