You unfortunatly have the older style steering assembly and is not an easy fix. My best advice is to take it to a reliable shop to have the steering repaired. It may just need the bushings on the shaft replaced or the gears themselves, depending on the damage.
You can look down at the bottom of the steering shaft and see where the gears are skipping over each other.
