Question about Hardware & Accessories

Open Question

My generator is a WTGN 4200 and is not producing any power. I removed the AVR -3 to replace with a new one. The original AVR got 1 single adapter with 3 wires and 3 single wires 2 wires +&- Brushes

The generator is a 6.5 KVR 240V with electronic ignition Australian standard. The most of AVR -3 for sell they have the same shape and size 250v470, the only difference is that, they have a single adapter with 4 wires and 2 single wires. My question is that can I connect the generator single wire to the spare one in the adapter? I appreciate you help

You will have to have schematics from the old wiring diagram. Then you will have to confirm its consistency with actual old wiring before you can be sure that the wires run to the proper places on the old heater and a/c system. This sounds like a gas furnace and is simpler than a heatpump. Once you know what distinguishes the wires with the same color, you should label them and then you may call them a different color if they were wired with wrong wire colors. You may be in luck if you go to the furnace control box an look at the terminals.. They are usually labeled with a R for Red and W for white and Bl for Blue and B or Black. If you have other colors on these then it sounds that it was wired with wire spare wire by someone who knew what they were doing but neglected to leave a path for someone else follow.
You may be able to use a continuity tester of circuit tester to id these wires that are in question...
ie, once indintified, you can match with the requirements of the new stat.

not to familiar with the generators however , I do know that the old style receptacle for 240 volts was three prong. Then OSHA got a hold of it and added a second ground to make it 4 prong, Thats why some houses use a 3 prong dryer cord and some use a 4 prong. hope this helps. and if it has 2 240v outputs BONUS they dont make em like they used to.

Coleman 3500 with subaru engine no power to outlets

    Hello there.
I'm assuming that engine runs fine. if there's no power output then the AVR or carbon brushes are dead. remove the back cover of the alternator very carefully and look at the center to find the rotor rings and check if the plastic brush holder hasn't melt or heat deformed and make sure the brushes make good contact against the rotor rings. if everything's fine then the AVR is dead. The AVR is a crescent shaped plastic container similar to this one.

There are at least two AVRs for this generator. The original AVR has the diodes mounted on an external heat sink. The updated AVR has the diodes mounted directly on the circuit board. I have a schematic of the original model with the external diodes but it doesn't have the values or parts on the schematic. I will be more than happy to e-mail you a copy of what I have.

GENERATOR WILL RUN BUT DON'T PRODUCE ELECTRIC

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Without a model number... I am guessing about what type / brand and MODEL of generator you have. I have to assume it is a Coleman Power mate.

Try flashing the field. Do this.. take and electric drill and plug into the outlets of the generator. Turn on the output power GENERATOR ON. Squeeze the drill trigger and rotate the chuck as fast as you can. This will induce voltage into the stator and they usually will start producing power. When it does produce power it will try to yank the drill chuck head out of your hand so keep that in mind.

If the above does not work...
Remove the small cover from the center of the endbell. It covers the end of the rotor shaft and has 2 brushes under the cover.
INSPECT the brushes visually (do not remove them yet)
    (Generator OFF!)
Use a meter to read resistance by probing the electrical contacts of the brushes. You MUST read LOW resistance. This is the rotor winding.
    No resistance or high resistance
Remove the brushes inspect for damage. Try to probe the slip rings of the rotor. (You might have to make a 14/2 Romex electiral wire extension to get some solid copper wires to touch the rotor slip rings) Again you must read LOW reistance.

If you have low resistance and the brushes are good.....
Reinstall the brushes. (TEST for AC) Start generator
    STILL NO OUTPUT?!!!!
Use a meter on DC to read AVR voltage output to the brushes by probing the brush terminals. You should read 3 - 7 VDC. No voltage.... hmmmm Possibly an AVR problem but...

    Try this.
Rig up a 9 Volt battery that you TAPE the wires to the battery terminals and the case of the battery
Just loosely connect the 2 wires to the brushes. Wrap the battery with a rag it might explode if you don't remove it fast enough. Your going to yank this off as soon as it produces power QUICKLY.

Plug in a light or a small fan so you can see that power is being produced. Let it run a few minutes before shutting it down.

To do anything else I need to know your generator model number to do winding and voltage regulator checks.

    Thanks for choosing FixYa,
    Kelly

I have a Suzuki gasoline generator Type SE 3000 A . It runs but give no power. No 12V or 220 V. Help

most likely it is the AVR, they tend to get zapped when you turn the generator off with a load on.. or run out of gas with a load on..
Always turn off or disconnect your load before shutting down.
other possible problem is the brushes might be worn down.. but that is rare...i'd check the AVR 1st .
the AVR is a regulator. and is located under the generator cover.
it is a block looking item. 2 connectors, 2 wires goto the brushes, and the other is a molded nylon connector.
there are 2 different models, type A and type B.
they do sell them on ebay for less than $90.00
once you install it,, start the generator up to confirm power out out with a accurate meter.. the voltage should be close, there is a small tiny brass adjustment ***** to fine tune the voltage..
    after that reassemble..
( NOTE, the new AVR might not be the same size as the original, so you may have to fabricate you an adapter plate.. make sure you secure it well either way you go.
    good luck..

Powermate PM0435002 engine runs but no electric power

you must check a few things since your question is general:
1- brushes are on the armature-holder, checkem ,,look for shattered parts or no continuity...if there is then replace them.

2- check your breaker by using a continuity tester,

3- AVR located on the armature-hlder and actually screw-fitted into it, if you smell burns on it...or see burnt parts replace it.(some times it does not appear on it....so if you checked 1 and 2(above) then replace it).

    New gen no power out!

I had a very similar problem with my Powermate generator. The repair was fairly simple. I purchased a new capacitor from http://www.jackssmallengines.com/do_it_home.html. The part was less than $10.00 plus shipping. I just put the part number in from the owner's manual. to replace the part you remove the power end of the generator (four long bolts 7/16), Unplug the wiring harness and then remove the three screws which hold the clear plastic shield in place. All you have to do is pull the wires off of the blue capacitor and put the new one in. When you pull the end off you should also look at the diods to see if they look burned. If they do you can get these from Jack's as well. I hope this fixes your problem

    Good luck!!

    Electric generator not producing electricity

    Check the following:
    AVR
    doids windings
    stator windings
    rotor windings
    exciting windings
    AND
Exiting windings could have losts its 12volt exiting load. In that case it must be exited by 12 volt external battery
Another common problem is burned off wire or loose connection

5000w gen. no powe out put

when engine runs but no power is produced ...there are three things you need to check:
1- brushes may be shattered.(open the generating unit cover(from the stator and rotor side) and you'll find it..if it is shattered..then replace it.
2- breaker...to test this disfunction...connect the two wires(the one going to it and the one coming out of it) together and try again...if it generated power..then the breaker is out of order...either replace it...or keep it connected directly (DON'T leave any naked wires)
3- AVR open the generatng unit cove again.you'll find the AVR (screwed to the rotor holder) here is a picture of an AVR:93c8b52.jpg if it is burnt out...replace it..
IF you tried the 3 things i wrote and none of them worked, then you have a problem with the stator or the rotor...but that is very rare to happen...it's probably one of the three///..
