Question about Singer Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I'm having issues with my Singer Futura XL-420. I have done all the troubleshooting and I'm still getting an issue where it alerts me for E6 - detects upper thread breakage, but thread is not broken.

It can make about 9 stitches, then gives me this error, and the underside is bird nesting. I have changed needles, re-threaded a million times, cleaned the bobbin casing, adjusted tension, and even took the case off to check the tension disks and make sure everything is clean inside. I did find a little bit of thread stuck on two different areas on the inside, and was able to remove it all without issue or damaging anything. This helped a little, but I am still having the same E6 error at the same number of stitches. I can adjust the thread tension as tight or as loose as possible, and it is still doing the same thing. I have done 'tension' tests where you pull top thread through with the presser foot up, and then down, and I am getting tension, so it should be threaded right. I have also been embroidering on the thing for months, and it's never been an issue before. I think from what I have gathered is that the upper thread is not fully coming out of the bobbin casing area, causing it to loop up underneath.

Just a couple of things:

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the threads. When threading the tension disks, stop and give each thread an extra little tug to confirm it is seated in the tension disk.

It could be there is still some lint or broken thread hiding somewhere. Or the thread sensor is sensing thread where this is none. Perhaps it has lint or even a fingerprint on it.

I have a Singer Futura XL550. The small hoop will not slide on to machine. the big one goes on easy. Could they have sent the wrong hoop when I bought it? Or is there a secret to putting it on

No, there's no secret to putting it on, but occasionally, you can get a bad hoop. You see, the hoops for every machine are not made by the same people that make the machine. Often, for instance, the center markings are slightly off.

If your machine is under warranty, just email Singer with a copy of the receipt, and they'll send you a replacement. If it isn't under warranty, you can easily find one on Amazon or ebay. By the way, if it fits the XL-400, any SEQS machine, or an XL-420 or -480, it will fit yours, too, and they're not expensive.

Which one is the best for Embroidery Singer XL 420 or Singer SEQs 6000?

Difficult to advise since we really don't know your criteria.

SEQS 6000 FUTURA QUARTET
FWIW, I would be hesitant to purchase a machine with so many functions, ie sewing, embroidery, serging. Seems like a lot of things to go wrong.

XL 420 FUTURA

Your best bet is to do a lot of research on the internet. Read the reviews from people who have purchased these machines. Then go talk to a Singer specialist. Only when you have gathered as much information as you can are you able to make an educated decision.

WHY does my SINGER 420 xl leave thread loops on the top of my design...I am so sick of this machine..Singer does NOT stand behind their products..I WILL NEVER BUY SINGER AGAIN!

You're probably correct. The new Singers are not what they used to be...Singer was bought out a few years ago and many buyers have registered their regrets and disappointment with the new products and service.

Most complaints about sewing machine problems concern thread loops under the fabric, which are usually caused by the upper thread. Your problem is not as common. Generally, when thread problems occur on the top of the fabric, it is a bobbin issue.

Try a brand new needle. Make sure the needle, thread, and fabric are compatible. Also, check that the needle is installed correctly.

All About Needles

Remove the thread from the machine. Check that the machine is clean--no lint, dust bunnies, thread pieces in the bobbin area, stuck in the feed dogs, or under the needleplate.

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading. Rethread the machine from the beginning. Check that the thread path is correct for the upper thread and that the bobbin case is loaded and threaded properly. Use the same thread for both upper and bobbin.

Most machine standard upper tension is set at the midway point. However, this is just a beginning point. The tension differs from one machine to another and may need adjusting depending on the fabric you are sewing.

Retest your machine.

If loops are still forming on the top of the fabric, then the bobbin tension may be too loose. Try tightening the bobbin tension (only 1/8th of a turn at a time!).

Understanding Thread Tension Threads

Sometimes it is a thread issue. Experiment with different brands of thread. Avoid old or bargain bin threads (the thread in bins at the fabric store are not the best, also Coats & Clark may not work well in your machine). Stick with better quality threads, ie Gutermann, Aurofil, Isocord, etc. Be sure to use the type of thread that is suitable for your project, ie do not use embroidery or cotton thread for sewing garment seams unless you want to be embarrassed when the seams start popping... Polyester used to be the bane of sewing projects but is now used for many items because the quality has improved and, in some cases, surpassed the former favorite cotton. Polyester is light weight but strong. Some machines just do better with one brand of thread over another.

You may also consider testing the machine with different types of fabric to see if it performs better with a particular fabric type or weight.

If it continues to be a problem, perhaps the bobbin case is damaged or malfunctioning. If you cannot find the answer to your problem, you may just need to take it for service.
