I am looking to buy a used sony tv for 100. She said the red bulb is out and that is the only thing that is wrong with it. It make the picture look 3D with out the buld. What do you think. Should I trust her and buy it and replace the bulb myself? how hard is it to replace a bulb?

Usually a flashing power light on a rear projection TV means a bad bulb, try replacing the bulb. Also try unplugging it for 10-15 minutes, then come back and plug it in and try again. Also if its been a long time since its been serviced it could be dust buildup causing overheating, do you hear the cooling fan running? It could also be a failed cooling fan. Generally the first thing i do with projection TV's is clean them, clean all the vents, pull the bulb out, clean out the cooling fan and bulb housing, and then try a new bulb. If that doesn't fix it then its a bigger internal problem and there is no quick fix but have it serviced.

Double picture symptom shows tv got problem with convergence out section and most probably convergence out chips would be replace to fix this issue. Though its job of qualified tv tech to replace convergence out chips yet I can provide you helpful info if you are handy with electronics stuff repair and can replace parts in circuit board as soldering work is needed with proper tools to repair tv. Thanks.
There are inputs on the back of the set. If your tv is Sony 51ws510 then it is capable of HD, but you have to have component or DVI cables to connect the tv to the HD device (HD cable box or DVD player).

<br>
On your set the component inputs on the back of the tv are video5 and video6 in the middle located in a vertical line (red, green, blue rca video connections with red and white rca audio connections).

You also have a DVI input toward at the top of the input panel (white connector with red and white rca audio connectors).
You can find a new OEM Sony replacement CRT's (red, green, and blue bulbs) for a model # KP51HW40 from a major Sony distributor at the following links:
If your tv is Sony KP-51WS510, then it has problem in convergence ICs or Board and needs to be replaced. Best Buy has no idea about Bulb, this TV is 3 CRTs rear projection system and has no Bulb or Lamp inside. Need further help, let me know.
the model number KP-51WS510 deosnt use a bulb or lamp. and touching the face of the lamp will not cause color problems in the picture. if your tv is an LCD projection then i would suspect the optical engine as the culprit. to check when you turn the tv off do you still see the blue distortion? if so then you have a bad optical engine.......as long as it is an LCD projection.
