SOURCE: mower backfires and loss of power

i would also check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and see if gas flows out at a good rate (into a metal can of course) or if it trickles out. if the latter, then gas tank either has junk at the bottom preventing the gas from flowing or the vent hole (usually on the gas cap) is plugged.

i have also had my carb float bowl rust out on me, but that took 10 years.

SOURCE: weedeater will not start. was running, shut it off

Pull the spark plug after pushing the primer bulb and cranking a few times...if the plug is "wet" (indicating fuel is present in the cylinder) then the next step will be checking the compression...compression should read above 90psi (preferrably 100-125psi)...if compression is below 90psi, the most likely culprit will be a stuck piston ring.

My mower was running fine it started to lose power and run about half throttle now it want run put chock on it run a second then quits

Hi Bobby:
I'd probably tend to give it a maintenance "once over"
- Change plug(s)
- change oil (and filter)
- flush carb (check fuel filter)
- fresh gas
- clean air filter
- clean underside of mower deck
See how it runs and we'll help with any remaining problems.

Have a Zero Turn mower (50 inch deck), engine will only run with choke full on and bogs down or stalls when demand put on engine ie. mowing in high grass. Changed filters (fuel and air) with no change in...

You have a lean fuel condition. This means your carburetor is clogged. By turning choke on you are changing the air/fuel ratio in the carb. You will need to bring this in to a good repair shop to have the carb cleaned.

be careful with starting fluids, they strip cylinder walls, NOT a good thing. Prime with WD 40 or gasoline. forget the starter fluids. In all likely hood your carb needs cleaning. Pull the fuel line off the carb first though, and crank the engine. If you get good fuel flow, you just have a plugged fuel filter.

What do I need to troublshoot if my lawn mower want crank after sitting up for awhile

I assume you have checked to make sure you have spark at the plug. Just hold it against any metal surface to make sure you have good spark. Also you may have a carburator that is now gummed up. I would check that out, Also you could spray some start fluid into the carb or filter to see if it starts at all.

Thanks for stopping by...
When you said "cleaned the carb" - did you disassemble, and clean - or just spray carb cleaner into it?

Sitting for 2 years - the additives in the gasoline can leave a varnish that will clog the tiny jet orifice in the carb bowl.

You'll need to disassemble, and clean out the jet with a wire.

Popping and sputtering can be caused by a few things:

Old Gas - drain and refill with fresh.
Dirty Air Filter - Check and clean/replace it.
Poor Fuel mix/ratio - clogged Carb Jet or sticky butterfly.
Poor Spark - check/change the plug.
Fuel Vaccuum - remove the gascap - and start... the vent hole may be clogged. Clean and/or replace it if it starts running better with the gas cap off.
Clogged Fuel Filter/inlet screen - backflush the tank and the debris should wash back into the tank. Rinse out and re-install.

This is most likely a fuel delivery or spark issue.

Change the fuel and plug first... and give the carb a GOOD cleaning... then re-check.

Thanks!

Had bad fuel, replaced fuel filter, pump and fuel going through pump when cranking. will only run when fuel poured down carb.

hi there

sounds like you have problem in your carb , remove it and clean it out

check jets and air bleeds carefully , check float level , check for tight valves on inlet and exhaust

inlet should be 0.003thou ( inlet valeve is the bottom one and has a alloy push rod ) and exhaust should be 0.005 thou ( exhaust is the top one and has a steel push rod )

just be aware that if the unit is a OHV single briggs motor these engine were prone to blowing head gaskets

some symptoms were , wet / oily inside the air filter, low power , blue/white smoke , running poorly

take a look

cheers hope it helps

This sounds like the carb is plugged. Sometimes fuel thickens and makes globs...

If you verified the fuel flow to the inlet of the carb, then you need to take the carb off and open it up....
So, what needs to happen is you blow out all of the passageways with carb cleaner.

Any adjustable jets: make note of the position it is in, and FINGER TIGHT turn it clockwise until it closes (typically 1 to 1 1/2 turns) SOOOOO, you can set this jet back to the same positon....when finished blowing everything out, bottom the jet and back out the number of turns out, noted for that jet.

Open the float chamber, and clean as necessary, Inspect the float adjustment: invert the carb, and observe the angle of the float, relative to the carb body.... Usually almost parallel, but not necessarily.
Inspect the inlet valve, and clean those areas...

I usually use all new gaskets and valves, but if you are not a carb person, cleaning is effective and I think old gaskets may be okay, if not torn or damaged.

Cleaned gas and changed fuel filter. Mower only

There are a number of things that can cause this, depending on the engine fitted. Assuming a Briggs & Stratton V-twin...

Check that the carb solenoid under the float bowl is connected, has battery voltage when the ignition switch is at 'RUN', and is functional.

As a quick check, with the engne OFF, turn key to 'RUN' there should be an audiable 'click' from the carb if the solenoid is working.

After that, check that the fuel pump is delivering fuel (disconnect output, and crank engine). SHould be a good flow.
