Question about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer

1 Answer

Wireless connection doesn't work (ip not in subnet)

I can't get my printer to work wirelessly. I've run the Brother setup program, both with a network cable and wirelessly. In both cases, it sets up the printer, prints the network data page wirelessly, and then never prints again (until resetting, doing setup again, and printing another network data page.) I checked the network data, and saw the printer assigned an ip of 192.168.0.4, but my computer ip is 192.168.24.101. It appears that the printer is being assigned a number that's not in my subnet. In addition to not printing, nothing can find it, not the setup program and not BRAdmin Light. (FYI, yes, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, my DNS server is 192.168.0.1, DHCP is 192.168.24.1)

I can't for the life of me find a manual setup option. All the advanced settings I've found only seem to work for a printer already setup. How do I manually set this up to force it to use the right DHCP and subnet?

I had fits getting it setup myself for wireless. Despite any efforts to use the wired connection to change the wireless settings, I just couldn't get it to work. I ended up printing the configuration page to learn the expected SSID and then changing the SSID on my wireless router to match the SSID the printer was polling for. At that point it acquired a wireless address properly. Because I was several hours into making it work, I never tried changing anything else after I got it working.

Brother mfc-7840W not picking up wireless IP address

It is common, mainly because the MFC connection is lost to your PC. Are you able to print or scan from another wireless PC that you have? If yes, contact your network admin or router oem. If no, reset network card. Run the Setup Wireless Wizard. Make sure you have router info such as SSID, Network Security Key, Authentication Method (Open, Shared, WPA/WPA2-PSK), Encryption (None, WEP, AES, TKIP). Enter those info, it must be CASE SENSITIVE. Just in case you dont know your router info, contact your router oem.
For Advanced Users.1. Click your Wireless Icon at Task Tray2. Right-Click your Wireless Network Name3. Select Properties4. Go to Wireless Security Settings5. Take note of the settings that you have there and enter it again on your MFC
Goodluck! If you still need more assistance. Call us 1-877-Brother. :)

Brother 8890DW Wireless Configuration Difficulties. I want to configure the above printer through a wireless acess point connected to a router via ethernet. The router sees the printer, yet the computers...

I don't have a solution, but I have a similar problem with a new Brother 8690DW MFC machine. Out of the box - I can't establish wireless connection. Brother "tech support" (!) insists I am typing in the WEP key incorrectly... doesn't matter to them that I've configured literally hundreds of devices with encryption keys before.

I'm about ready to return this machine and get another. Yet, I suspect that the Brother setup instructions are missing something I need to do - I can't figure out what, though, and have been through every relevant setting I can find.

I can,t get the wireless to work on MFC685CW

There really isnt a trick. It is mostly making sure the networks are setup on the same subnet. For instance if your router sets your internal IP addresses through dhcp to 192.168.1.1-254 then you need to make sure that the printer is setup for that same subnet as well. Apparently some routers will set you up with the 192.168.0.1-254 subnet. I have yet to see a printer work well on dhcp from a router.
Here is what I do. I log into the router and set dhcp to assign IP addresses in the range of 192.168.1.150 to 190, which is way more then enough for most households. Then I set the printer IP address manually to 192.168.1.100
Then when installing the printer I tell it to use that IP as the port. Works every time.
Now if you cant get into your router, you can go ahead and try to set the IP in the printer setup fairly high so that it is unlikely that the router will assign it to another computer or something.
If you do that you should be good.

Internet connection lost when wireless printer added to network

for reseting the password of ur dlink router u have to press the rest button on the dlink router (genrallyit on the bottom or on the back of the router it is like a hole u have to use a pen or pin to reset the router back to its factory default settings after that password of the router will automatically back to admin or password login to ur router change the settings to static ip in the router so that u can provide the static ip of the other router to ur this router (example if primary router HL 2170 ip address is 192.168.1.1 then u will provide this dlink router the ip address as 192.168.1.5, subnet 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.1.1 primary dns 192.168.1.1 now save the settings in the dlink router now the ethernet cable from ur other router will go directly in to the internetor wan port of this router. now connect wirelessly to any router both will work fine without any problem

Network Problems

Thats bizzare that it would do that. that would mean that you cant browse for network shares accross the router either. hmm.
The latest colour network scangear will allow you to scan across subnets, the original versions had a problem with that. The latest version is V2.30 and is available here http://www.canon.ca/buzdownloads/clrnwsg_wsu_cnsg_0230.zip

You will probably have to specify the scanner IP address manually as the discovery function wont work accross subnets.

Just curious, can you give an example of your wired and wireless IP addresses and subnet masks?

Hi,

That usually happens when you are going to connect the printer PRO using the wireless. To avoid that problem, try connecting the Printer using the Manual Setting of the IP.

Solution
NOTE: If the router has an outdated or firmware that was not supplied by the manufacturer, update the router to the latest manufacturer-supplied firmware. Set a Manual IP address on the HP All-in-One
  1. Change the IP settings to Manual from the HP All-in-One.
    1. On the front panel of the HP All-in-One, press Setup .
    2. Press the left arrow button (c01135026.jpg ) or the right arrow button (c01135027.jpg ) to select Network , and then press OK .
    3. Press the left arrow button (c01135026.jpg ) or the right arrow button (c01135027.jpg ) to select Advanced Settings , and then press OK .
    4. Press the left arrow button (c01135026.jpg ) or the right arrow button (c01135027.jpg ) to select IP Settings , and then press OK .
    5. Press the left arrow button (c01135026.jpg ) or the right arrow button (c01135027.jpg ) to select Manual , and then press OK .
  2. Set the IP settings from the Manual IP Settings menu using the following instructions. For this item... Do the following... IP Address Type a manual IP address on the same subnet, but outside of the DHCP range. Choose an IP address with the same first three digits as the assigned IP but a much higher fourth digit (between 1 and 254). For example, if the original IP was 192.168.0.1, assign the static IP to 192.168.0.200. Subnet Mask Do not change the Subnet Mask. Default Gateway Do not change the Default Gateway.
  3. Run the Wireless Setup wizard and try to associate the HP All-in-One to the wireless network.
Workarounds Connect the HP All-in-One via a Wired Network
  1. Disable Wireless Radio. Follow these steps to turn off Wireless Radio.
    4. Press the left arrow button (c01135026.jpg ) or the right arrow button (c01135027.jpg ) to select Wireless Radio , and then press OK .
    5. Press the left arrow button (c01135026.jpg ) or the right arrow button (c01135027.jpg ) to select Off , and then press OK .
  2. Connect an Ethernet Cable to the RJ-45 connector at the back of the HP All-in-One.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports of the router.
  4. Turn off the HP All-in-One by pressing the Power button. Turn on the HP All-in-One again.
Connect the HP All-in-One via Ad Hoc Wireless Network
  1. On the HP All-in-One control panel, press Setup .
  2. Use the down arrow button (c01155210.jpg ) to highlight Network , and press OK to display the Network menu.
  3. Use the down arrow button (c01155210.jpg ) to highlight Wireless Setup Wizard , and press OK . The Setup wizard searches for available networks, and the color graphics display shows a list of detected wireless network names (SSIDs).
  4. Use the down arrow button (c01155210.jpg ) to highlight your wireless network SSID, and press OK . If any encryption is configured in the computer, the wizard will prompt for the WEP key.
  5. Highlight the letter or number on the visual keyboard, and press OK .
  6. Highlight Done on the visual keyboard, and press OK .
  7. Press OK again to confirm the settings. The HP All-in-One will try to connect to the wireless network. Once the wireless network is successfully setup, a message should appear stating that the connection has been successful.
  8. Press OK .

Connected on Wireless but unable to connect on Internet

If not done allready, setup the lan IP address and default gateway in win98 Click MyComputer-ControlPanel-Network-Double Click TCP/IP Adapter for your 3com device-insert LAN info for IP Adress-subnet mask, Gateway and your Internet service providors DNS Addresses info Tab's (3x different Tabs "IP Adress" "Gateway" "DNS Configuration") IP Adress will be at least one number higher than your gateway address and not allready being used by other PC's on your network and gateway address will same as your router interface address subnet mask will be the same for all PC's on your network. For 3com and Netgear routers LAN setup is usually Gateway = 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0 IP Adress = 192.168.1.10(choose alternate number than 10 if allready used by another PC on your network, try to use round numbers, must be a number higher than 1) Once all info is entered click OK (this may trigger a database info update message and task)now your LAN is setup and ready to talk to your network Restart PC and try browsing again. May possibly require reinstallation of the TCP/IP client (you double clicked this to setup your LAN in Win98) or reinstallation of the IIS(Internet Information Services)component found in, Add/Remove Programs-Add/Remove windows components and then try LAN setup again if this does not work first time round
