When I am half way down the stairs i smell ammonia . We have a dog that occasionally wees in the kitchen , on a tiled floor , from the stairs through the little sitting room before the kitchen .

An ammonia smell from the dog's u r ine indicates some problem with the dog's liver or renal system. Also, a house trained dog will only do that when it has lost partial control. See if you can get a u r ine sample for testing, and take the dog to a vet.

Ammonia and like metabolites are alkaline, so to neutralise it use a perfumed acidic substance like lemon juice or lemon extract in the floor wash.

How to train your dog to use their dog bed

Many people have told me that they find it difficult to train their dog to use the bed they bought for them rather than sleeping on their owners beds. I thought I would post a few tips here that you may find helpful.

The easiest way to train a dog to do this is to start when they are a puppy. Needless to say, older dogs can also be trained.

A large part of bed training, believe it or not, comes down to proper bed placement. It is crucial you find the right spot in your home for your dogs' bed. Try to find a place away from direct sunlight and free of drafts. Try to find a location away from too many loud noises and excessive interruptions, while still close enough to feel a part of the family interactions.

I recommend that you try to associate their bed with positive reinforcements such as playing and snacking. You should verbally reward your pet every time he/she approaches the bed on their own agenda. Try putting one of your dogs favorite toys in the bed. This will indicate to your dog that it is a safe place.

Be patient. With some dogs bed training could take several days; depending on the age of your dog, it could take up to 2 weeks. Stay diligent and don't give up. Your dog will come to love sleeping in their own bed and you will find that they will spend a lot of time there.

Yesterday, while machine quilting, I heard a clank. Now the feed dogs won't feed the fabric. The feed dogs seem to move back when I start sewing; it seems as if they stayed forward before...

Did you check to make sure the feed dogs weren't inadvertently dropped. Most sewists drop the feed dogs for free motion quilting or darning.

My dog spends a lot of time outside in the yard. Should I buy it a dog house?

You definitely should buy your dog a house if it spends a lot of time outside. This will ensure that your dog has a cozy place to go to when it gets really hot or cold outside and when it rains.

Can I make my own door for my dog house or do I have to go and buy one? I want to keep my dog a bit warmer in the winter but dont really have any money left this winter to spend.

There are a couple of ways that you can make your own dog door without have to spend too much. The first involves making your own from wood and attaching it with hinges, but if you need an easier solution you can use a piece of thick carpet. Staple it to the top of the dog house door opening and cut some strips into it or just leave it loose enough that your dog and can push his way in and out.

Every time I take my dog to the groomers he starts shaking uncontrollably. Is it possible that they do something wrong to him while he's there? He seems so scared to go?

Don't worry, most dogs have this "shaking" reaction when going to the groomers. By nature, dogs are very intuitive and pick up on their owners anxiety. Try keeping calm and reassuring your dog that everything is ok. If you are really concerned then find a shop that will let you stay and watch while your dog is being groomed.

Is using a dog crate cruel?

Dogs in the wild need a safe haven and they usually seek out a place where they can call their own. If a domestic dog has no particular place to hide it will usually go under a table or stairs to shelter itself. So no using a dog crate is not cruel and it is a great way to house train your pet.

On the front of the dirt dog there are 4 "Cliff Sensors" which tell it to back up or turn when it "Sees" steps. Clean these with a Q tip. If that doesnt work, go through the "Diagnostic" procedure listed here....http://www.robotreviews.com/chat/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10821&start=0

I can't train my dog

When he is sitting, use your stylus and pat his head, then drag it down his nose. He should lay down...then an icon appears on the top right of the lower screen. touch this icon. it then prompts you to speak the new command. This will take a few goes before your dog understands it but once he does, there will be little stars aroound him. So far 3 of my kids have got their dogs, to beg, sit, lay down, roll over and dance. Good luck :o) le
