There is a compressor start relay/overload combination and a run capacitor. A model number is needed to assure you get the correct parts. If it continues to do the same thing, and 3 in 1 hard star kit can be purchased. Make sure you get the kit with the connections for a run capacitor. This part will give the compressor and extra jolt to get it going. This can buy you anywhere from a few months to a few years, but having to use the kit instead of original replacement parts means your compressor is beginning to fail. Prior to trying either of these parts, be sure your unit is UNPLUGGED.

If you have a 5 year warranty, you should not take anything apart and consult the place where you got the appliance.
They should be able to tell you exactly what is covered under warranty before they work on it.

SOURCE: Compressor starts, then stops

Hi, this problem will be with either the starter for the compressor or could actually be the compresser itself. Both of these can be replaced but it is not something any one should do unless they have done this before and know what they are doing.

Chances are, the compressor has locked up. You can try skeeter140's suggestion, but I doubt it will do any good.

Pull the relay off the compressor and shake it. If it rattles, then it's probably good. If it doesn't, go buy a new one as suggested.

Repair is not usually recommended.

Clicking fridge freezer and not working :(

Unfortunatly that clicking is the overloads built into the compressor which is telling you that the rotor in the compressor is locked up and she ain't Going to run anymore. This happens when the compresser overhaets over time and the bearings get wear and the varnish on the windings gets worn down the the rotor sticks to the windings on start up. She is dead my friend, sorry for the bad news. New compressor in a fridge your looking at about $500-$800.

Fridge/freezer doesn't work although light on

Hi David and welcfome to FixYa. I am Kelly There are a few things to try before you go replacing parts.

1. after the unit has sat with no power for about 30 minutes plug the unit in and listen for an attempted sart on the compressor. An attempted start will only last for approximately 40 seconds. During that attempted start listen to see if you actually hear the compressor turning. If you hear it turning and it again shuts off wait another 30 minutes and try it again. (On a unit that has been in storage for more than 6 months it can take a few attempts to get it going.) If it just hums and does not move then your compressor is locked and as it attempts to start you will notice a slight dimming of the house lights. Don't give up on it right away... do about 4 cycles of the plug it in.. listen for the 40 seconds then the CLICK of the compressor thermal overload switch. If your not hearing a CLICK after 40 seconds or so then there can be a compressor PTC relay / thermal overload (KliXon) problem or the possibility that the run capacitor has failed. After all of these have been checked out then you start looking at controls and power. Give it a few more tries to see if it takes off. If it does not then just repsond here and someone will help you.

Thanks for using FixYa,

Fridge question

Sounds like you mad have a bad relay or overload on the compressor. I would also check your condenser fan motor to make sure its running and blowing air on the compressor to cool it. If its not running the compressor may be overheating and shutting off on its overload. If the condenser fan motor is running I would assume that you would need a new relay and overload it will come in a kit. Usually it will make a clicking sound when the compressor is TRYING to start and then shuts off on its overload if the start components are bad.
Hope this helps _MJ_

Freezer not working whirlpool model gd25dixb02 also puddle of water coming out from under.

IF it started leaking after you turned the fridge off - you have problem with defrost system.
OTHERWISE you have problem with the sealed system or compressor start device. I will cover the latter only.
First, read this recall, check your serial number and call Whirlpool if necessary.
If your fridge is not affected by the recall and the fridge started leaking while still running:
Check the start device first. If there is clicking noise every few minutes - this is what you need to know. Unplug fridge. Remove cover on the back of fridge. On compressor (black roundish metal thingy with copper tubing coming out of it) there is a start device with wires coming to it. Remove from compressor, turn it contacts side down and shake it a few seconds in your palm. If small pieces, looking like sand fall out or you can hear those pieces loose inside the start device - replace it.
This is the part you need: 8201799 Installation instructions are enclosed
"New10" coupon takes 10% off on that site.
If your start device is ok - check the capacitor, which is either attached or wired with black wires to the start device. Check if its capacity is close to whatever is printed on it. Replace if capacity is way off, capacitor shorted or open. That part is here. It's very unlikely that you'll need to replace it.
If both things are ok, you may have a problem with compressor or refrigerant or refrigerant lines, which you cannot legally touch without an EPA license for refrigerants handling.

Frige gets hot and makes clicking noises.

Sounds like the compressor is not working very well the clicking is the compressor starter trying to start the compressor. May be low on freon or bad compressor. You can probaly buy one cheaper than fixing this one
