Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

No sound on Dell Inspiron 6400

About a year after I bought my Inspiron 6400, which is pre-loaded with Windows XP, I could hear sound only when I plugged in my headset. Then I noticed that the microphone would not work: perhaps this problem in fact arose at the same time as the first. Finally, the sound ceased altogether to work. Randomly, every few months, the sound might come on again for a few hours, but generally there is no sound (not even system sounds).

I have tried several times to download and run the Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD audio driver from the Dell support site, with or without first uninstalling the device. I have checked the device (via "sounds and audio devices") through the control panel, which shows that "This device is working properly." Using the troubleshooter has not resolved the problem.

The speakers hav problems or the sound chipset on the mainboard must be replaced.
you can use an USB external sound card too.

Before you use the Recovery CD you need to backup your data because to restoring your laptop will wipe your data off the hard disk.
To backup your data when you cannot boot up your laptop, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Connect this hard drive/USB adapter into the USB port of a working computer. The computer will see it as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and backup your data.
You can then fit the hard drive back into the Dell laptop and boot up with the Dell recovery CD to reinstall Windows etc.

Sounds like a bad drive but it may still have the data on it (hand it over to a professional).
Next time, don't forget to do your backups so you don't have to worry.

it sounds like your display backlight has gone bad. If your handy you can get a new display. If you are really good you can replace the back light.
