Question about Water Water Heaters

Open Question

I have an Ariston Classico STD 150. Now the night element has appeared to stop working however if I turn the day element on so just like an emersion heater I get hot water after its heated up.

Night element gives me constant hot water. I have changed the fuse in the wall switch and have checked all the wires and they all look connected as far as I can tell.

SOURCE: I am not getting any hot water, only cold water,

Sounds like the by-pass valve diaphragm. This valve detects that hot water is being drawn off at the tap and then diverts the mains input water across the heat exchanger. Very often it's the diaphragm inside the valve which is punctured or split. This can be replaced [depending on model] if you take apart the valve
. Remove the front panel and lower the control panel. The valve is at the bottom left of the boiler
Suggest turning off the service taps to the two heating pipes and the cold mains inlet pipes before tackling the valve

SOURCE: heat works fine during the day at night it stops

Turn on the boiler and jump out the pressure by putting a wire between the 2 electric connections only after the unit fires up than put the jumper on, if it runs ok it is the pressure switch.

SOURCE: I have an 80 gallon Rheem Hot water heater #81V80D A. In the last 5 days it stopped heating water after 6PM. I have hot water all day, but none at night. What do you suggest?

1) I bet the water heater has hot water, but hot does not arrive at tap because of bad faucet cartridge or bad recirculation system check valve
http://waterheatertimer.org/Crossover.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html#crossover

2) When cold water arrives at tap, go check if water heater has hot water. Then do the crossover test. Then add comment and say what you discover

3) Electric water heaters can be repaired by homeowner using generic off-the-shelf parts from local hardware store.

You need to replace the heating element or sometimes they have two heading elements. Make sure you turn off the breaker, drain the water, before you remove elements....Do NOT turn breaker back on until water tank is filled with water.

Ariston Troubleshooting

follow this test and use the multimeter and fix it. God bless you
If there is no hot water, first push the reset button on the high-temperature cutoff; test the thermostat and replace if faulty (see below). Test the heating element(s) and replace if faulty
.Test and replace a heating element:
  1. Turn off power at the electric panel and post a sign warning others not to turn it on.
  2. Remove the access panel on the electric water heater.
  3. Disconnect one of the element wires and set a multimeter to RX1000 (resistance times 1,000). Touch one probe to an element mounting bolt and the other to each element terminal screw, in turn. If the tester displays anything but infinity ( open circuit), replace the element.
  4. If necessary, set the multimeter to RX1 and touch the probes to the terminal screws. If there is any resistance reading at all ( closed circuit), then the element is good. If not, replace it. Both upper and lower elements are tested in the same manner.
  5. To remove the element, first drain the heater.
  6. Disconnect the remaining element wire. Remove the mounting bolts holding the element in place. Remove the element.
  7. Replace the heating element with one of the same model, shape, and rating. Make sure you also replace any installation gaskets.

Bosch GL4ti Ariston water heater - have no hot water is it worth fixing or should I replace? Also, is the reset button different from the on/off switch?

Check if unit has power to the plug. If so, could be bad heater element or bad thermostat. Also could be reset button on thermostat and yes, the reset button is different from on/off switch. Element about $38, thermostat about $30 from www.plumbingsupply.com

Occasionally, the high temperature limit shut off device may trigger and shut the

system down. This occurs when water temperature exceeds 190° F and shuts off

power to the heating element. The shut off device may also trigger from a power

outage or electrical storm.

To reach the thermostat:

1. Pry off the round cover plate (V Fig. 3/1) from its right hand edge (W Fig. 3/1) with

a small flat-head screwdriver.

2. Remove the Phillips screw revealed beneath the round cover plate.

3. The cover (C Fig. 3/1) can now be removed by pulling out its left-hand edge. When

reassembling, work in the opposite way being careful to insert the tongue of the

cover into the slot.

4. Firmly press reset button (B Fig. 4). Reconnect power.

5. IMPORTANT: Check the operation of the thermostat, turn temperature dial from

high to low, if the red light does not go off on low setting, turn off power supply and

call a service person to replace the thermostat.

6. If the system works, place dial setting to desired setting. Note: a lower setting is

more economical and reduces the risk of scalding. Replace cover plate.
CAUTION: Call a technician if the high limit needs to be reset frequently.

Bosch PowerStar125 won't heat and I can't get one element to work

It sounds like you have a copper canister unit. Ohm out the elements in that one canister. the directions are on the websight for bosch, or I can walk you through it. But you will need a digital multimeter to do this. If you have a blown element in that one canister, then the tco will not reset.
