I have a Vizio E500i-A1 television. I have power, but the picture has shades of green and red. Depending on whats on tv, the green and red gets worse as shading changes. The pattern does follow vertical lines but just in patches. What could this be? Do I replace the mainboard, Tcon? Can it be fixed?

It is obviously difficult to provide an acurate reply / quote by email.
I would estimate a repair costs of about £150 - £200 or so, perhaps less if you use reclaimed parts.
Your TV sounds as though it requires a Y-Sustain PCB.

Hi,
All plasma an lcd TVs have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times resetting the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They can sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, and the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken if you decide to tinker with em, the usually have lift locks that release them, but it is very easy to wreck em.
Good luck.

Hi,
If you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't
troubleshoot the unit yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional
to isolate the problem. Also, check if your unit is still under warranty/extended warranty
period, avail it because the manufacturer will fix it for free. Opening the
back cover will void the warranty. Hope I helped you. Have a nice day! Thanks for using Fixya.
This kind of symptoms indicated of malfunction on the power supply board and/or the LCD controller board.
Out of regulation on the power supply board will produce that kind of symptoms feeding the LCD controller board. This was caused by faulty electrolytic capacitor in the output of the power supply board. Sometimes it has a physical indication of fault like bulged/dome at the top but not all, capacitor checker is needed to determine its condition.
If the output voltage has already been confirmed good, the connectors from the LCD controller board must be pull-out, inspect, and then re-insert and ensure that they are properly seat-in. If the symptoms still persist, this board must be replaced with new one to back the unit in normal operation again.

If your picture looks green on all inputs and it slowly degraded, then you have an optical block problem. not repairable.
