Take the lens off and continue pressing the shutter untill it doesn't react anymore, you should then have a normal menu without the error message.Put your lens on and you're all sorted.Cheaper and less hassle than sending it to Nikon.

SOURCE: Nikon d40x shutter stuck

The manual (pg 112) simply, and unfortunately, states this message "Press shutter release button again. If error persists, consult with Nikon-authorized service representative".

Some questions that might help: have you had the camera in some extreme conditions, damp, sand, etc. Clean the shutter button really well. Maybe use a small air blower and clean in the shutter release creases.

In the end, if the error continues, it will need to be serviced.

not sure, but it sounds bad. you could send it to nikon on L.i, Ny, but they are wicked expensive. Try local repair shop first.

Camera hesitates too long before taking picture. Is there another setting I should be using?

The delay is caused by the camera doing a lot of work between the time you press the shutter release button and it takes the picture. The camera has to meter the light and set the exposure, and acquire focus. This is true of just about all compact and bridge cameras, though they're getting better at it. These cameras simply do not have the circuitry that more sophisticated (and bigger and heavier and more expensive) cameras do.

You can reduce (but not completely eliminate) the delay by anticipating the action. Press the shutter release button halfway to meter and focus, then press the button down the rest of the way at the right moment.

When i t turn on my Nikon coolpix L810 i keep getting a message to"turn off the camera, remove the lens cap and then turn back on." it seems like the lens starts to expand and then retracts as if it's...

I'm afraid that you are right about the lens being stuck.
The camera has several checks to make sure the lens can zoom freely in and out. If the camera detects there is a blockage of some kind, the lens will retract and switches of the camera to prevent more damage.
I'm afraid there is nothing you could do to fix it, other than bringing it to a repair shop and have them take a look at it.

Nixon coolpix l810 will not turn on just replaced batteries wondering if batteries are the issue

When switching it on you have to be sure you remove the lens cap beforehand as an error message will be displayed. If you do not see an error message and the cap is off, you might not have the updated firmware version 1.1. Nikon's website states:
"When some new AA lithium batteries were inserted in the camera and the camera was turned on, the camera sometimes failed to function. This issue has been resolved."

The shutter release button on my Nikon Coolpix s620 fell off. I have the button and the spring. Can I fix this myself?

No. you can not. FOr that you need to open the complete camera body. If you expert then you can try.
