Question about Plumbing

Open Question

Pump suspended in pond. Not used last year. This year, it took a while to get water to hydrant. PROBLEM- The pump seems to run for short periods (30 secs.to 1 min.). Help appreciated. THANKS, Tom

Although not sure, turning the hydrant on/off might cause pump to turn on for another brief period, etc., but that could be coincidental.

SOURCE: Pond pump trips circuit breaker

The circuit breaker trips because there is an electrical short in the pump itself or in the wire feeding the pump. A cause of this could be a bare wire, or a crack in a wire. Remove the pump and put it in a five gallon pail of water and test it. If it still trips the breaker you will know the problem is in the pump or the cord to the pump.

SOURCE: My Westinghouse LTV-27w6-HD picture is scrambled periodically

Before you bother to read the text below, you might be better served looking at this thread:
Westinghouse troubles
If you aren't nauseated yet, continue with my original reply:
If the picture seems 'pixelated,' broken up into randomly sized and placed blocks, then it is losing synchronization with the digital signal coming in. This is certainly repairable and may be due to lousy assembly quality rather than a failed part. Most of our modern sets are assembled by robots but there is a degree of manual soldering still to be done and this can result in 'cold' solder joints that can fracture and fail due to heating and cooling of the innards of a set.
Unfortunately, unless you have a semi-retired TV service man in your neighborhood who is already financially independent, the labor costs could run fairly high for this kind of service since it requires methodical searching of the circuitry and could eat up some time.

I have a deep water well, it has not been used a lot in the last few years & the water is brown, can this problem be rectified

Hi Enslow, I can only guess that if the well hasn't been in use for some time then it's possible that if you run the pump and get brown water it may clear in time. My suggestion is simply continue to run the pump few a decent period of time that maybe a few days . As you do this take samples in say clear glass containers and see if there is improvement. So take samples every couple of hours and it will be apparent if the water is clearing or not. Make sure the pump is a decent distance from the bottom of the well.
Hope that helps
Regards
Steve

Have a little giant 4-mdqx-sc that I bought used I plugged it up dry just to make sure it runs and it is making a horrible noise from the impellier not the motor will this go away when it is in line with...

yes it should go away, this is a magnetic drive pump so it needs water to lubricate the porcelain shaft, it's not good on it to run it dry for long period of time just a short time, these pump eventually wear and will need to be replaced. they seem to last 2-5 years .. and back pressure is not good, so if say running a fountain bleed off excess water do not use a valve to restrict flow.. this is how we get the 5 years instead of the 2 ! .. jay the pump guy longwood fl

Torpedo pump...I have one when I plug it in...it trips breaker

I had the exact same issue. I left mine out for the winter and when I plug it in, the breaker trips. My warranty was up so my friend took it apart. The seal had broken alowing water to leak into the bottom the pump where the wires connect to top of motor. This is supposed to be water free and is protected by several seals.

I am currenlty trying to put sealant where the cord goes into unit to stop water from going in. I will let you know how that works.

One tip my friend recommeded is to make sure there is no stress on the cord as it appears this seal is weak and and kind of stress will break it. hope this helps -- Rob

De-icer must have a short

The best solution to ice in garden ponds is to keep the water moving as moving water will not freeze. Depending upon the size of your garden pond you may try adding a fountain. All major pump brands carry small fountain pumps that include various fountain spray nozzles/heads or you can buy the pump and then purchase a Fountain Head Kit separately. The fountain will provide 1 - movement of water at the surface, 2- aeration for the pond, 3- pleasing sounds year round, not to mention the 4- aesthetic value. The added bonus is that you will not have to worry too much about shorts if you use a submersible pump. So try dumping the deicer and go for a fountain.

Pump goes on and off

Does the pump have thermall protection? It sounds like its getting hot and tripping the thermal protection switch in the pump windings.
