E might represents insufficient inflation for your mom. For automatic inflation monitors usually there is a mechanism to keep inflating the cuff to higher pressures for people with higher BP. Check how is done. In some auto monitors, while cuff is inflated you keep pressing on START button until pressure reaches to some 15 to 20 mmHg higher than the pressure that auto usually stops and displays E.

Dear Edward: Likely, either cuff not tight enough or not in correct location on your arm or not holding device at correct height. Make sure you use Lithium Ion batteries. Try it on someone else. Dr Ron Grassi,Jupiter,Florida.USA. www.DrGrassi.com

SOURCE: I have an Omron Model
After 5 years, the unit probably needs re-calibrating. In which case, you'll need to have the manufacturer do that. Most off that service free of charge or just a minimal charge. Contact Omron.

SOURCE: Neither of the cuffs
Robert, I'm not sure that the cuffs would be interchangeable. But, I suspect the problem you're having with the cuff is operator error. Speaking from experience, it's somewhat difficult at best, to apply and arm cuff to yourself. It does take some practice, but if you can get the cuff snugly in place, it should inflate properly. If you want to pursue with interchanging the cuff, contact HoMedics at 800-469-3342, to see if it's possible. Perhaps, you should get a BP Monitor that has a wrist cuff. They're a lot easier to apply and use.
