Hi, I don't have the best news for your here. This type of problem is caused by the timer, i.e. main control that you use to select cycles starting to fail. If I am correct, when you put the machine into a normal cycle, the knob rotates, but the machine is silent. Just sits there.
the older Maytags are a cut above many other machines on the market.
If you install the timer yourself, you will probably pay about $100.00 for the part.
If you supply me with the model number and serial number, I can give your some instruction on how to do it. They will be located on a placard probably on the top rear of the machine. If my memory serves me correctly
It is not a difficult job. does not require any expensive tools to do.
Hope this helps,
Have a Happy New Year,
