SOURCE: I have the Woods 59018

Open following link to identify timer, read wiring instructions, and download on-line manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028

How to wire timer
1) Timer-green-wire connects to bare ground wire.
2) Switch has 2 wires. Take switch wires and connect to timer-black-wire and timer-red-wire. Choose either one for now.
3) In back of electric box are white wires twisted together and covered with wire nut. Connect timer-white to these wires.
4) If electric box does not have white wires described above, then connect timer-white to bare ground.
5) Turn on electricity, and push timer door which is also the ON-OFF button. If lights come on, timer is wired correctly. If lights do not come on, then reverse timer-red and timer-black wires.

WOODS 59018 TIMER WIREING CORRECT INSTALLED WITH POWER OFF NETURAL GROUND UP TO CODE LOAD /LINE PROPER.NEW OUT OF BOX WON'T RESET. STEP 1 LAMPS LOAD SIDE GOOD. RETIRED CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN

I don't have answer for defective timer. Buy another timer if everything below checks out:
59018 7-day timer has limited 1 year warranty, and appears to be made by Tork
Timer is for 120Volt single-pole only.
Rated for 1000 watt tungsten, 8A ballast, 1/4 HP
Push reset button with toothpick > not necessary to press-and-hold other button to accomplish reset.
After reset, 12:00 am Monday should display.
Programs are deleted. Reprogram timer.

To check, change and delete specific programming, press PROG key until selected program displays, and then set new programming >>> or press-and-hold MODE button and press PROG button again to delete selected program.

Timer has non-replaceable 30-day carryover battery and does not lose programming after power outage, and will retain programs until battery is depleted.

Review wiring:
Hot to timer black.
Neutral to timer white.
Load to timer red.
Ground to timer green.

Lights will blink if timer red and timer white are connected to load together.
Timer will not function if timer black and red wires are reversed. Display will not show.

Sunset sunrise doesn't seem to work anymore

Timer is not identified.
If digital timer does not function as before, try resetting timer and then re-program.
If timer has battery, then change battery and reset timer.
If reset does not restore functionality, then timer has gone bad. Most in-wall timers have 1 year limited warranty.

Below are common 7-day timers, but there are many different brands:

You posted under Woods 7-day timer: except Woods timer does not astronomic dawn dusk function. Woods 7-day is same as Tork 7-day and GE 7-day, and they do not have astronomic function.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Woods-59018-59028.pdf
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028
Reset button is small round button.
Push in reset with toothpick or paper clip.
Then reprogram timer.

If you have Intermatic ST01C or EJ500 battery operated timer: Replace battery, then to reset timer: push-and-hold ON_OFF button, and then push reset button. Keep holding on-off button until display changes. Release on-off button and display will flash 12:00. Then reprogram timer.

If you have Utilitec astronomic timer, then press reset button and reprogram:

Just installed a in-wall digital timer model 59018 and when we try to program it when we hit the clock button the unit shuts off so we are unable to set the time (or anything)

Woods 59018 single-pole 7-day 7-program timer, color white:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028

I test timers and 3-5% arrive defective, and they never work. Some stop working within 1 year, and some last quite a while.
Timers are affected by line interference and polarity issues. So wiring in home has to be correct before timer will operate as expected.
Timer has to be installed correctly with each wire correctly connected.
Press manual override button and see if lights turn on-off. This will indicate if your timer is wired correctly. If lights do not turn on-off with manual override, the open link above for wiring instructions.
To begin programming, reset timer by pushing in the round reset button with toothpick or paper clip.
12:00 am Mon should display.
If the above items are all correct, then defective timer is suspect.
If you try multiple timers, and each timer has same problem, then line interference or bad wiring is suspect, or you are buying from somebody who has a bad batch of timers.
Try wiring same timer at neighbor's house and see if it works there.

Just installed the programmable timer and had programmed the clock and on off times. Then realized that it was set for AM instead of PM. Hit reset and now can't set the clock or program. Just blinks...

I test timers.
Some arrive defective, and some go bad quickly.
Industry standard is 1 year limited warranty.
All these timers have reset button that should restore functionality.

You posted under Woods digital programmable.
Open link to download on-line manual and read ez wiring steps.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#59028
This timer is reset by pushing reset button, without pushing any other button.
Some timers require on-off button to be pushed while pushing reset button.

I suggest turning off power to timer and see if that 'resets' timer.
Otherwise open link below and run through troubleshoot checklist, and also double check wiring.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#troubleshoot

If timer will not function correctly, then exchange for new timer.

Resourceful do-it-yourselfer can buy similar timer at Home Depot located near light fixtures and doorbells.
GE15086 -or- GE15071 with daylight savings time.
Advantage is ez exchange if problem occurs, and you give yourself extended warranty.

I answer questions for free.
I know timers and electrical devices, and have tested most of the brands.
You posted under the Woods 7-day timer 59018 or 59028.
Here is the manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Woods-59018-59028.pdf

There are several programmable timers today that look like Woods, and each brand has different programming.

If you do not have Woods, add a comment and I will walk through programming your brand

1) You have the clock set correctly which implies the wiring is correct. Good job!
2) Programming review:
Each program requires ON time to be set, and then OFF time to be set
For example you set Program1 ON 5:00PM for ALL days.
And then you set Program1 OFF 11PM for ALL days.

3) Programming steps:
Press PROG button until Timer 1 ON appears on display
Use Hour button to set 5 PM
Use MIN button to set :00
Default selects ALL days
(If you want other days, press DAY button until display shows correct block of days)
Press PROG button again to save Program1 ON

4) Now for Program1 OFF

5) To set Program1 Off
Press PROG button until Timer 1 OFF shows in display.
Use Hour button to set 11 PM
Use MIN button to set :00
Default selects ALL days
(If you want other days, press DAY button until display shows correct block of days)
Press PROG button again to save Program1 OFF

6) Program 1ON and Program1 OFF have been set ... so press the CLOCK button to return to current time.
If you want to set another program, press PROG button until Timer 2 ON displays

7) After setting programs, press Clock button so current time shows.

8) The manual shows one more thing ... if you program the timer during the hours 5-11pm, and the timer should be ON during those hours, you have to 'tell' the timer to turn ON by pressing the manual override ... after that the timer will operate normally.

If you need more assistance, add a comment.
If instructions help, give it a 4-thumb

WHERE IS OVERIDE BUTTON

It depends on the timer.
On some programmable on-wall timers, you push the little door and that is the manual override.
On other models, you open the door and push the on-off button, or another button.
On some models, there is a slide switch on the front of the timer: slide the switch to ON
