I need help putting the bobbin threader back onto a Nelco JA38 sewing machine and the springs are giving me fits. Any help?

Not sure if you are having problems with the bobbin winder or threading the bobbin. This may help:

Nelco JA 38 Sewing Machine Threading Diagram

To avoid awful thread nests under the fabric, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread.

Interestingly, the bobbin threading instructions (above) show the bobbin loading into the bobbin case so it turns COUNTER-clockwise. This is the opposite of instructions for most machines. You can probably try both, the clockwise or Counter-clockwise,and see if one works better than the other.

Be sure to use fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil on your machine. Open it up, while gently wiggling the handwheel, drop a couple drops of oil every place that metal rubs against metal. Avoid plastic or rubber parts! You may even find little round holes throughout that are oil ports. Be sure to get the area around the needlebar, presser foot lifter, feed dogs, the bobbin area, and all the dial and selector mechanisms.

You can find manuals for your machine online (not free!).

Brand new machine, do I need to oil it? singer talent 3321 is suppose to be EASY...needle broke, now it will not sew, seems to be stuck and bobbin seems to not work.

1. You need to remove the bobbin case and adjust the tension. The tension should allow the thread to move with a slight tension. Clean the area with a qtip. The bobbin case sits in a an area that is called the race. The race needs one drop of oil. Replace everything.
2. Replace the needle. Make sure it is in the right direction. Thread the top while the foot is up. If the thread gets stuck while threading there is a problem. The thread should move easily while the foot is up. After you thread the machine except the needle you can put the foot down. Now pull on the thread. It should give you a slight amount of tension. Usually four is a good number. If the tension is too tight you can adjust as needed. Now, thread the needle. Hold the thread under the foot while you turn the hand wheel. The bobbin thread should come up.
3. Give your machine a try with a slow speed.

I just recieved an older kenmore 24 stitch sewing machine and it has no manual with it , my problem is why wont the machine pick up the bobbin thread ?

You can probably find a manual from Sears. They carry a ton of Kenmore user manuals.

First thing to always try--insert a brand new needle!

Bobbins do usually have a specific way of being loaded. Most machines require the bobbin to be inserted into the bobbin case so when you pull on the thread tail, the bobbin turns clockwise (this is when you are looking at the backside of the bobbin case - at the bobbin). Also, be sure to thread the bobbin thread through the bobbin tension mechanism.

Tip how to put bobbin into the bobbin driver on sewing machine

If the upper thread is not picking up the bobbin thread, it is usually because there is a timing issue (means the needle is arriving at the bobbin at the wrong time to connect with the bobbin thread).

Sewing machine won pick up bobbin thread hook timing fix

P.S.--if your Kenmore is non-computerized (ie, mechanical) be sure to oil using fresh, good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil (NOT cooking oil, 3-in-1, WD-40, or old stinky brown stuff that may be in the accessory box). Apply a couple of drops every place metal rubs on metal (while hand-rotating the handwheel). Do NOT oil nylon, rubber, or belts!

Top thread covers bobbin thread makes. Stitches very thick

Remove all the thread from the machine.

Install a brand new needle.

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot during the threading process and rethread the machine from the beginning. (Check that the upper and bobbin threads are threaded correctly in your machine.)

Set the tension dial to the midway point. This is a factory standard setting but each machine may vary.

Test your machine. The ideal tension is when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. If the upper thread is showing on the bobbin side of the fabric, the upper tension is too loose. However, if the bobbin thread is showing on the top of the fabric, the upper tension is too tight.

Tension is not static--whenever you change projects, ie fabric, thread, needle, you may need to test the tension on some scrap project fabric first. Get the tension adjusted before stitching the project.

Make sure you clean and lubricate your machine regularly to keep it operating--consult your owner's manual and use only good quality sewing machine oil (NO 3-in-1, cooking oil, WD-40, or old brown stinky sewing machine oil).

If you are still having issues, take it for service.

Bobbin thread bunching up on bottom side od material while sewinginto a mess, while top thread fine. HOW DO I fix this, please.

Hi, this is a lack of lower tension. Check to make sure your bobbin is seated correctly and that you have used the correct thread path. Check the tension by drawing some thread from the bobbin with your hand, if it reels off too easily, the tension hook for the bobbin is too loose, tighten it down a tiny bit with a small screw driver and try again. If the bobbin tension is normal, than the problem may be your upper tension, if it is too tight it can cause your bobbin to snarl. If a tension adjustment does not fix the problem, you may need to seek a specialist.

On my elna supermatic 722010 sewing machine, the thread makes the bobbin pop out and the thread get tangled underneath. I have had it fixed twice, which is expensive. Should I just get rid of it and buy...

not unless you can find another swiss elna, like star series su. check bobbin in right way, holes on top to wind and load. you havent bought anothet type bobbin??? go to www.arizonaexpressionz.com and download a manual for supermatic. then read bobbin winding and threading carefully and rewinf bobbin and thread up again. make sure thread goes into tension spring all the way. bobbin should turn anticlockwise when yoou pull thread. also please brush clean bobbin holder area and check for any threads caught there. now a drop of quality clear machine oil in middle hole and gently run for 30secs to work in. do this every time you get your machine out. there are several oiling points shown in manual. oil them. these machines are quality but yours may need love tlc from a elna tech especially if it has not been serviced in a while. but a well maintained elna will out stitch a new plastic machine any day in my humble opinion. if you want to join yahoo group elna heirlooms, experts who service their own and share photos info manuals and love these vintage classics.

If your thread tension is OK and u have correctly threaded machine, I would check manual for first the right bobbin and put in machine right. I have have issues from badly wound bobbins too. If you have replaced correct needle and your fabric, thread and tension are good, I would check manual for the right bobbin tension. Wish I knew more to help......

Thread on bobbin looping

Sounds like you need to adjust the bobbin casing tension (tighten the little screw on the bobbin case). I would also oil the face of the bobbin casing so that the thread wont snag or tug on it at all.

I was given an Elna Supermatic 722010 and am not sure how to wind the bobbin.

A link to a supermatic manual is here
http://www.arizonaexpressionz.com/elna_instruction_manuals/Supermatic.pdf - I suggest you download this and print it out as this machine is over 50 years old now and manuals are scarce.

Disengage the clutch by holding the outside of the fly wheel and turning the inner knob of the wheel towards you.
You need to take the thread from the spool across to an eyelet on top left, then back to the bobbin winder, up through a hole in the top of the bobbin and hold the thread tail. Flick the bobbin across against the stopper. Now press the presser foot or knee control to start the motor. Hold the thread tail until youve got coverage across the bobbin enough to hold the start, then stop winding and cut the thread tail with scissors. Now continue winding but put the handle of your scissors on top of the thread spool to stop it bouncing and ensure your thread winds smoothly and under tension.

Watch the bobbin fill and give the thread a nudge to fill top and bottom as well as the middle evenly, you want a nice even wind. Fill to 3/4 and stop, flick bobbin back off the stopper, then cut the thread. Remember to re-engage the clutch by reversing the first step.

This is a lovely heirloom Elna machine - you need to thread the bobbin as the manual describes and get the thread into the tension spring. Please read the manual information on oiling too, this machine needs to be oiled on the red spot locations every time you use it according to the manual, use good quality clear sewing machine oil for this purpose.
