Question about Bernina Sewing Machines

1 Answer

The zigzag on my Bernina record 830 bought in the '80s does not work properly. What can I do to get it to stitch wider than 1/8?

Even when set at width #4, it only stitches at a width of less than 2 millimeters about 1/8. I've already oiled the machine.

Your machine is seizing due to lack of regular oiling.

Here is a diagram of the oil ports for your 830 Record:

Following is the process I used to "save" a few older Berninas:
Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

Bernina 830: When making a buttonhole... the zigzag #1 stitch on left side looks nice... then the #2 bottom bar tack looks good...

Please tell us which Bernina 830 you have--old mechanical Record or new computerized?

Here's a recommendation from a Bernina owner (Ellen Rosenthal on Yahoo Group "BonosBerninas":
I agree about the buttonholer. The reverse stitching never looks as good as the left or forward side. I “hack” this by pivoting my fabric and only
going forward-avoiding the reverse stitch. Also helps to do the whole process twice and to use some tear away or wash away interfacing.

There is another Yahoo group called "BerninaThirtySomethings" that is a great resource.

My Bernina 830 will not switch stitches. It says the number but shows straight stitch and sews straight stitch

Is it a new 830 computerized model or the older 830 Record mechanical?

If it is the 830 Record, it needs oiling--1-2 drops of good quality sewing machine oil (specifically concentrate on the stitch selector lever and oil the metal parts that move against other metal parts) Do NOT oil the cams, plastic gears, any rubber parts, ie belts, bobbin winder wheel.

My Bernina 830 sewing machine will not sew any of the decorative stitches.

Is this the vintage 830 record, or the new electronic model?
If it's the Record, flip the top open, and oil all metal-to-metal. Run for a full minute, oil again, and run another minute. It should start to work once the oil has been worked in.

Supply of new stitch cog for Bernina 830 Record

I don't know what a stitch cog is by your definition but I suspect that you may be referring to the cam stack worm gear, part # 310 007 03. These gears are available, however those produced and sold as after market parts online have ranged from bad to very bad. I would suggest that you find an OEM part (not a reproduction) that are still available from time to time on EBAY etc.
Changing the gear is not as straight forward as it may look. The proper replacement requires: 1. removal of the cam stack without damaging the machine parts, 2. removal and installation of the new gear with the correct alignment of the individual cams, 3. installation of the cam stack and pattern indicator without axial play, 4. correct parabola timing of the main-shaft worm wheel and cam stack gear, 5. synchronization of the zigzag and automatic cam parabolas, 6. pattern indicator timing, 7. checking and adjusting the automatic needle position. Have a Bernnina record 530. The zigzag will not work, just straight stitch on any width setting. all the other fancy stitches(1-12) work fine.

the cam or gear of the zig zag could be worn or damaged,, having the machine checked,, would tell you for sure what wrong with the zig zag..

How do i use the zigzag stitch on my bernina 830

Hi, open the top cover and if you watch what goes on inside from the top when you move the top change lever you will see part of it goes through a fork or U-shape part. This part is probably stuck and needs some oil. After oiling and working it back and forth a bunch eventually it will start snapping into the notches its supposed to. I beleive then you will have your zigzag back.
Either that or you have the stitch width set on zero.

Bernina 830

The 830 is a fantastic machine. It is completely mechanical internally for the stitch selections. A good cleaning and oiling should get you back on track.
Although it has not been used much, some of the original oil or grease can become sticky or pasty in time especially if it has not been used that much. Again a good cleaning and oiling should solve your problem.
Good luck, bushvideo
