    Hi, Diane,
I've downloaded the manual, and it appears that you need to set manual focus in the menus system, and set the lens to MF (Page 60), and on Page 62 it mentions MF assist. When you say it is not communicating, can you be a little more specific, please ? Tony

How do I get my Nikon d5000 to recognize the lens with extention tubes?

Without any electronics the camera cannot recognize the lens. Set the exposure mode to "M" (Manual). You'll have to set both the aperture and shutter speed yourself.

You'll also get no exposure assistance from the camera's light meter. You can review the picture after taking one and/or use the histogram to tune the exposure.

My manual focus ring is so tight that I can barely focus. Is there any way to lubricate or loosen this ring short of sending it out to Nikon for repair?

I'm assuming this is a DSLR camera and not a point-and-shoot. If the camera body is not set for manual focus, the focus ring on the lens will not turn.

When the camera is turned on and the 16-105 DT 3.5-5.6 zoom is attached there is a repeated clicking sound that continues until the camera is turned off. A sony camera salesman indicated it was the lens. ...

I had the same problem with my SAL-16105. It turned out that inside the lens the FOCUS DIFFERENTIAL RING (Artnr.: 321020202) was broken. The camera tries to move the focus from one end to the other when it is turned on (probably to check the functionality), but as the ring is broken, focus will never reach its end-point. Thus the camera continues to try to turn the mechanics futher until either the gear on the lens ring or one of the gears inside the lens will jump, making the clicking sounds. Another reason might be that one of the brushes ("focus brush") inside the lens that are used to signal the position of the focus to the camera electronics is damaged. (This might even lead to the mechanical destruction of the focus differential ring I think). I was able to repair my ring, but as I had to glue it, after a few months it failed again. I'm waiting for a replacement ring now.

The manual focus ring on my camera doesn't work. The ring turns but does not seem to adjust the focus. Automated focusing still works. How to fix it?

Two methods:-

1. Use the slider switch on the left of the camera to set it to MF (manual focus). The focus ring is an electronic one rather than a physical control like the zoom ring, so the response can seem slow.

2 Go into the camera menu and enable DMF (Direct Manual Focus). This allows you to override the autofocus simply by adjusting the focus control, but it does not work if the slider switch is set to the AF C setting (continuous autofocus), it only work in the AF-S (AF only activates once when the shutter is half pressed).

How do I get a nikon d80 to use a manual lens

If you mean a manual-focus lens, just focus the lens using the focus ring on it.

If you mean a non-electronic lens, then you need to set the camera to Manual exposure mode. Control the shutter speed by turning the command dial. Control the aperture by turning the aperture ring on the lens. You will get no metering assistance from the camera: you can use another light meter (this includes using a different lens on your camera just to get an exposure reading) or just take pictures and look at the results on the LCD.

Adapter ring make camera read no lens deteched

The 650-1300mm lens lacks the electronics to communicate with the camera. You'll have to focus manually, and set the camera's exposure mode to Manual.

I have a d80 and while I have a Nikon AE lens, I also have a collection of older Nikon lens's. They work outside but don't work with a flash. Can you tell me if there is any way to fix this problem?...

I found this in my D80 manual regarding non-cpu lenses and their limitations:

The non-CPU lenses listed below may be used, but only when the camera is in mode M. Selecting
another mode disables the shutter release. Aperture must be adjusted manually via the lens aperture
ring and the camera autofocus system, metering, electronic analog exposure display,

** and TTL flash control can not be used. **

Except where otherwise noted, the electronic range fi nder can be used with
lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster.
• AI-modifi ed, AI-, AI-S, or Series E Nikkor
• Medical Nikkor 120 mm f/4 (can only be used at
shutter speeds slower than 1/180 s)
• Refl ex Nikkor (electronic range fi nder can not be
used)
• PC Nikkor (electronic range fi nder can not be
used when shifting or tilting lens)
• AI-type teleconverter *
• PB-6 Bellows focusing attachment (attach in vertical
orientation; can be used in horizontal orientation
once attached) *
• Auto extension rings (PK 11A, 12, 13; PN-11) *
* Electronic range fi nder can be used if maximum effective
aperture is f/5.6 or faster.

There is a great deal of info in the manual about the use of other compatible Nikon devices. If you have lost your manual, you can view / download it here:

DSC-F717 autofocus stops working

I was first going to also suggest a reset. Does your manual focus function correctly from near to far(turning the focus ring in manual) and does the wide to tele motion function fully and smoothly? (lens adjustability without restriction) Was your camera exposed to extreme heat or elements?(beach sand or water of any kind) It may mean electronics only or a mechanical restriction causing an electronic malfunction. A last resort may mean your closer documenting when or how frequent it happens and maybe ultimately a trip (for your camera) to Sony. Get a price quote for repair since you might strike a happy medium of using the camera differently (manually focussing) without exceeding the value of the camera for repair costs.
