Replacing transmission from K46 to a K66 in my D170 lawn tractor. Is there a "hardware" kit available with all the nuts,bolts required to change it out?

Go to... Enter the model number that is under the seat. If it's a lawn tractor, it will start with 917. That will get you to all the diagrams of the mower.

SOURCE: How do I chamnge the oil in my Craftsman lawn

There should be a pipe OR quick release valve coming out the right side at the bottom of the engine where it bolts to the frame. Most of the Craftsman riders I have worked on, had a long pipe with an elbow at the end of it and a plug in the bottom of the elbow for draining. Turn the wheels all the way to the left to allow enough room for a collection pan. It holds less than 2 quarts so the pan doesn't need to be too large

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

Info on repairing transmission, install belts

This transmission will be a Tuff Torq K46 series. You will need to look along the transmission's drive axle housing to get the model number. From there you can look-up the parts at Tuff Torq website under their catalog page. There is no service manuals that I know of but I did find a discussion on about repairing the K46 that has pics. As belt installation will have the IPL for the mower.

Hydrostatic mower won't go up hill

How old is your machine? I have a John Deere X300R which after just over 200 hrs got slow going upslope and then when hot would actually run back while on full revs and pedal right down hard. Contacted JD who said to get it "Lapped". Cost was $1,400 and likely to result in same again after another 150 to 200 hrs. This was a K46 drive unit. In the end I bought a K66 transmission and butchered the chassis to fit it. It is OK but I would not do it again as it cost about $3,000 all up and is not ideal. I am a retired manufacturing engineer so had the skills and gear. I suggest that your machine may be like mine was. I filled my new drive unit with synthetic oil, 15/40 grade and although expensive, I believe it is worth the expense. There is no quick or cheap way of overcoming the result of a defective drive unit that I know of.

I have not worked on these lawn mowers but there is plenty of posts on different lawn mower sites on how to rebuild the John Deere L1xx series transmissions. I would suggest have a read of this site. It also mentions the parts required and the cost. I understand these lawn movers use the K46 transmission system.

How to remove a stuck bolt on blades on riding mower.

The blade bolt can be very difficult to remove sometimes and will require an impact wrench. If that doesn't work, you will need to heat up the nut only with a Ox/Acetylene torch, then it will remove easily. Do not heat the nut too much or it will ruin the thread on the spindle when it comes off. Remember to heat the nut only.

How do you adjust the deck to cut evenly on a craftsman riding lawn mower.

make sure tire pressure is even first. one of deck hangers ether has an adjustable bolt and nut or ecentric. point blade tips out measure from tip to ground adjust nut up or down to even out. if ecentric loosen jam bolt in cente then turn bigger nut till tips are even tightn jam bolt

I have a husqvarna tractor yth1542 xpt . When it has run for about 45 minutes it will not climb hillls.replacing drive belt didnt work.

It is likely that your transaxle just isn't up to the task. I suggest that you try to operate the machine on the hills prior to going on flat land. This is a huge problem with these machines.
