Question about ViewSonic P225f (Beige) 22" CRT Monitor

1 Answer

Voltage / connection

I purchased this exact monitor second hand

within a week of buying it the screen would flicker and shrink (vertical hold only) and a slight popping sound would be heard when this occurred, about 2 days after this started occurring, the monitor stayed like that for about a min when we smelt smoke and noticed smoke eminating from the top of the monitor.
after unplugging the monitor and ensuring there was no actual fire, I took the case apart, there resided a large scorch mark on the circuit board about mid way back on the left side (looking at the front of the monitor)
directly under what looked to be a large aluminum heat sink.

not sure if this was caused by "dirty power" as my home dose not suffer from it that I am aware of and we have lots of other electronics.(2 computers one with a old 17" CRT and one with a 22" LCD, a xbox 360 on a 47" LCD TV)
I suspect a Issue with incompatible Hrz settings of a modern system on a legacy monitor, correct me if I am wrong.

Refresh rate cannot hurt a monitor. Besides, on modern monitors, if the mode is not supported the monitor will just shut down.

One of the vertical output transistors has failed. This is a common failure on cheap monitors.

My screen keeps flickering and its only two weeks old

Step 1 Change the refresh rate to match the capabilities of your monitor. The refresh rate is a measurement of how many times the screen redraws each second. Although this setting is related to older, desktop monitors, it can affect the quality of the Liquid Crystal Displays found in laptops. Right-click the desktop and choose "Screen Resolution," then click "Advanced Settings" and "Monitor." If enabled, place a check beside "Hide Modes That This Monitor Cannot Display" and choose a higher refresh rate from the list.
Step 2
Update your graphics card drivers. This is the most likely cause if you've always had a problem with flicker. Look for "Hardware and Sound" in the Control Panel and click "Device Manager." Under "Display Adapters," you'll see the exact brand and model of your video card. Go to the manufacturer's driver Web page and search for this model to download the appropriate drivers. Alternatively, you can revert to an older driver if the flicker began immediately after an update. In this case, return to the Device Manager, right-click your adapter and then "Driver." Click "Roll Back Driver" and "Yes" to confirm.
Step 3 Turn on Vertical Sync if the flicker occurs when DirectX or OpenGL is in use, for example, while playing a PC game. Vertical Sync, or VSync, locks the refresh rate of the application to the refresh rate of the monitor. Horizontal flicker is reduced, which improves image quality. For Nvidia cards, VSync is found in "Manage 3D Settings." For Intel, look for "3D Settings" or "Asynchronous Flip." On ATI/AMD cards, turn on "Wait for Vertical Refresh."
Step 4
Lower and raise the laptop screen repeatedly to determine if the flicker is related to movement. Hardware failure is the likely cause when flicker occurs only when the laptop moves. Most likely, the screen cable is loose or damaged, but the inverter and backlight can also cause this problem. The laptop needs to be opened in order to confirm the problem, but do not attempt this unless you are familiar with PC repair and do not mind voiding the warranty. For the best results, take the laptop to a licensed technician or send it back to the manufacturer.

My Toshiba M55 Laptop has a vertical 'ribbon' of flickering. Is it fixable?

Maybe your screen is going bad or the video card inside the computer is going bad. Try connecting another monitor to the computer to isolate the problem. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the computer. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok without the vertical ribbon then your lcd screen is bad and your video card is good. If the Borrowed monitor displays the same vertical ribbon as your lcd screen then your video card inside the computer has an issue.

The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

One line on screen

If the line is horrizontal then the fault is in the vertical deflection circuit.
It is not worth repairing an old CRT monitor, unless you have electronic knowledge. I do not recommend repairing CRT monitors yourself, because there are dangerous high voltages inside these monitors, even though the unit is unplugged from the main outlet. The CRT tube will hold high voltages for weeks even though the monitor is turned off.
I suggest you put your money towards a LCD screen, they are inexpensive.

This is a problem with the vertical circuit and can be as simple as poor solder connections within that circuit or defective parts. If you have no experience with soldering or TVs, this should go to a service shop. Expect a parts cost in the $30-$40 range for and IC +/or capacitors. If you'd like to attempt this yourself, please supply the exact make and model so I can post the parts required along with additional instructions. Please note that TVs contain potentially dangerous high voltages even when unplugged.

Thanks,
Dan

Flickering Picture?

Your set might have a high voltage leak and that is the noise you hear when is showing the screen problem or even maybe an arking too ,either one is related to the high voltage and it can be dangerous,if you are familiar with tv service you can try to see where is arking and replace the part with an exact replacement but if the set has a leak you will not see it and is not safe to be close to it,if you are not too familiar be safe and call for assistance from a servicer.
