gap from coil to flywheel is .010. if you've replaced coil, points and condenser with no spark i would try replacing the coil and points with an magnetron kit or a coil that allows for the elimination of points.

Ignition module gap
Place a business or index card between the fly wheel and coil, rotate until the magnetic attraction pulls everything tight together. Tighten the coil screws, rotate the flywheel until the attraction eases and remove the card. Ensure nothing contacts when flywheel is rotated.

My riding mower won't start, new starter spark plug and fuel filter. Now what?

You did not post any information about the motor. There is a specific gap between the magneto and the flywheel and also the flywheel has a woodruff key to make sure the timing is correct. Check for spark, check gap on magneto and check magneto if you don't have spark.

Whats the air gap suppose to be set at

Easy way to set that is to put a piece of electrical tape over the magnet on the fly wheel and rotate the fly wheel till it is under the magneto and then loosen the magneto bolts till you can slide the magneto up against the tape, Tighten the bolts, rotate the flywheel out of position and remove the tape. Rotate the fly wheel by hand to check for free clearance all the way around.

What is the correct gap between the magneto core and magnet?

The gap is .010. You can also use a card to gap the coil and after you tighten the coil and remove the card turn the flywheel by hand one revolution to make sure the magnet does not rub on the flywheel.

Dirty flywheel. Gap between flywheel and magneto too wide. Pull flywheel cover check for excessive rust on outside edge of fly, then check magneto for same. Check gap, then examine all wiring.

Not getting spark to plug on eagerbeaver 2014

Jeffuxum:

The magneto is probably where the problem is. You'll need to pull the cover off of the motor and check the gap between the magneto and the flywheel. If the bolts holding the magneto have vibrated loose, the gap between the magneto and the flywheel will be incorrect. While you have the motor cover off, check the wiring to make sure you don't have a short in your ignition wiring and clean the air filter. I don't remember what the gap is between the flywheel and magneto, but .010 In. sounds familiar. Both legs of the magneto should be the same distance from the flywheel and they must not touch the flywheel at any point. I have used a matchbook cover between the flywheel and magneto while I tightened the magneto retention screws and it worked.

I believe I have a 18hp B&S engine, and the magneto has gone bad twice...It seems to only last about a month, any ideas?

Well hard to say without seeing it, but did you leave about 0.010" gap between the flywheel and the magneto? Or have you been turning over the engine with out the spark plug wire being hooked up to the spark plug?

Lawnboy gold series 10400, sn 4906038, failure to fire. Possible bad magneto. Looking for replacement part and magneto settings; i.e., gap between flywheel and the magneto. Any other tips appreciated.

You should be able to get a new magneto at any local lawnmower repair shop. The proper gap can be achieved using a standard business card. When you get the new mqagneto, turn the magnets on the flywheel to the opposite side away from the magneto, replace the magneto pulling it all the way back away from the flywheel and "snug" 1 or both of the mounting screws.
Now, turn the flywheel magnet to where it is centered under the magneto, insert the business card between the flywheel and magneto and loosen the screw you tightened earlier. Magneto will pull down tight to the magnet. Tighten both screws then rotate the flywheel to remove the business card

Installing Amature-Magneto

The air gap for the magneto is .010 - ,014. A microfiche card, an index card, a common business card or anything NON-magnetic of the above thickness makes a good shim to achieve this gap.

  1. Remove the old ignition armature mounting screws. Then, disconnect the stop switch wire from the flywheel brake and remove the armature.
  2. Attach a replacement armature from the original engine manufacturer, using mounting screws. Then, push the armature away from the flywheel and tighten one screw.
  3. Turn the flywheel so the magnets are on the opposite side from the ignition armature.
  4. Place the appropriate shim between the rim of the flywheel and the ignition armature. While holding the shim, turn the flywheel until the magnets are directly adjacent to the armature.
  5. Loosen the tight screw so the magnets pull the ignition armature against the flywheel and shim. Then, tighten both mounting screws and rotate the flywheel until the shim slips free.
