Question about Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500 GB USB Hard Drive

3 Answers

HD Spins, and makes a "ticking" noise.

It sounds like the drive is spinning, but I'm not able to see it connecting to the computer. I've pluged it into different outlets and different usb ports, even on different compters. I'm not sure if tearing appart the my book and installing it in the computer will solve anything...

If it's clicking the drive is gone. If you have important data on it, put it in a ziploc bag and into the freezer for a few hours, then take it out and quickly connect it to the computer. This trick usually works long enough to be able to get your data off, but for all other intents and purposes the drive is dead.

It does happen that the controller in the drive dies, and it may work if you take it out of the enclosure and put it into the computer directly, but if it's clicking it's most likely mechanical failure of the drive.

Haier dryer makes ticking noise

The ticking noise could be either a piece of the belt hitting as it spins around, it could be something stuck in the drum that is hitting it as it turns too, or it could be the electric motor making the noise. Either way it sounds like you may need to tear it apart to see what's going on.

If you have no backup and your drive is damaged, that is it, no data.
Plug the usb in with your drive, leave your computer looking for the drive. If windows, it may take some time. If Mac it won't be long. If neither can see it, the TOC is damaged and it will need a computer engineer to try and recover the drive.

This hard drive is faulty. The ticking sound is the read/write head banging back and forth - known as the click of death.
There are companies that can recover data from hard disks BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

Noise from the hard Disk not a very good Sign.

Try the device on a friends or a relatives PC. if you have the same result , you might be having a defective HDD. best would be to take it to a local repair shop for recovery of DATA. ( if you have warranty now would be a good time to use it)

Your HD has probably gone bad beyond repair. you should contact some data recovery shop if there was crucial data in the HD

HDD is not dedected.

the first thing that pops up in my mind is a power problem. check if the hard disk starts making a 'spinning' noise when you plug in the power chord and turn the disk on. when you hear a ticking noise instead, it means the disk is broken. be sure it only makes the spinning noise. if it does, connect the usb-cable between the disk and the computer. if the disk is not recognised, replace the cable. if still not ok, post what you did as a comment, and please be as accurate as possible, because this problem may have several causes.

Western Digital Elements HD doing a clicking noise and no access

It might be the power adapter. I had one of these and two Maxtor external drives that just clicked that way and it turned out their adapters were bad. You can check with another adapter if you can borrow one from another drive, or use a replacement from Radio Shack. Make sure you get the same voltage and current rating marked on the original.

If the adapter isn't at fault, the small circuit board in the enclosure may be the trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and connect it to directly to a computer power supply to see if spins up properly.

If the drive still doesn't spin, it's bad. This is a common way for a drive to fail. Unfortunately, this leaves you with a drive that you can't read. Hopefully you've backed your important data up on CD or DVD.

Computer doesn't recognize my Lacie HD

From your description it sounds like you power adapter did indeed fail at first, but if the HDD spins now the adapter seems to be working fine at the moment. If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise http://hddguru.com/ is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

this hard drive is toast and sadly you are half the reason as you never, ever ever open or hit a hard drive.  There are data recovery firms however, they are very expensive.
