Remove the top thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct. Set the top tension at the midway point (this is a basic beginning point but may need to tweak this for your particular machine).

Sounds like the tension is wrong somewhere. Or machine incorrectly threaded.

My sewing machine makes loose threads under the cloth

It is your top thread tension causing the thread on the bottom of the cloth to be loose. Make sure your machine is threaded properly and the thread is seated correctly between tension discs.

Make small adjustments and do a test on scrap fabric until the stitches are tight.

When i first start sewing the thread will bunch up and make a rats nest how do i stop thisa

That is called thread nesting or bird nesting--or what I like to call thread "barfs."

Be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread. This releases the tension disk so the thread will seat completely.

Bring the bobbin thread to the top of the fabric and gently hold both thread tails in your left hand while taking the first stitch or two. It may be beneficial to manually turn the handwheel for the first couple of stitches. It also helps to have the take-up lever at it's highest point BEFORE starting to stitch.

Adjusting the stitches on White sewing machine 425

Adjusting stitches how? Are the stitches too short, too long, is the tension off, are there loops of thread accumulating (bird nests), thread pulls out of the fabric, is the top thread not picking up the bobbin thread????

I have a 9020 singer sewing machine I bought without a manual. I can't seem to sew without looping the thread under it. Almost in knots.

Are you saying the upper thread is knotting under the fabric as it stitches? This is bird nesting or thread nesting and is generally caused by mis-threading, the thread not being seated in the tension disk, or the upper tension too loose.

When threading the upper thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot. Verify that the machine is threaded correctly. If one guide is missed, the stitching will go haywire. Start out with the upper tension set around the midway point and then tweak it through test stitching.

Bottom thread is a tangled mess. Was going great, now can't sew.

bottom thread mess is an indication that the needle thread tension is too loose
check the needle /hook timing to ensure that it hasn't altered

When i start to sew it binds up from the bottom

be sure to hold the top and bottom threads in back and away from machine as you start to sew. once you have sewn several stitches you can let go and continue sewing. sometimes this is all that is needed to avoid the "birds nest" on the bottom of the project.

Be sure you are using a Class 66 bobbin for this Singer machine. Using another style bobbin can cause tension problems and thread looping/bunching.
