Laminated plastic cards and credit cards are guaranteed shredder killers even though some are marketed as having that capability. If you inspect the shredding mechanism, you will find the remains of something plastic embedded. Removal is a difficult and often unsuccessful process.

Testimonial: "have been pulling the plastic out with needle nose pliers, hope to be done by tomorrow! I did have to pull the top off to be able to have better access to the shredding mechanism, makes it a lot easier."

Shredder only hums will not grab paper

What sort of hum? Very quiet? Loud with vibration? Have you tried feeding anything else into the unit? Envelope? It's possible that you're not pushing the paper far enough in to let the shredder's teeth grab it.

Plastic got in shredder won't work, would like instruchions to take it apart to fix

Take out the paper bin. Look for and remove any screws holding the top part of the shredder to the base. Take the top off, turn it upside-down and you might be able to remove the jam. To take the top apart, remove all of the screws that are under or near the edge. Look out, it gets very messy when you take it apart!

Damaged shredding teeth on roller

I don't believe the parts cost, if available would be less than a new shredder if this is a home office model. Look on craigslist, Ebay or whatever for a new one. My advice, get one that can take at least 8 - 12 sheats and cross cuts. * is basically an envelope with 3 trifold pieces. Not very much unless you open all your personalized junk mail.

How do you take apart a shredder it does not go forward

when my Aurora- AS662C shredder wouldn't go forward I assumed it had paper jammed into the blades -with it unplugged of course ,I removed 5 screws (back does not release) used tweezers to remove the jammed paper. When I initially pried it open- an off wt. plastic bar type thing fell out of it's place (on right side ) I set the plastic bar into it's place(if you look at you'll see how it set's into place, carefully closed the top making sure the bar didn't move and replaced the screws. I then ran papers through it -worked like new ! I almost bought another one and was about to throw it out ,figured I didn't have anything to loose . Best of luck -hope this helps

I have a Royal HG12 that I bought two months ago. It has stopped working. The light goes on but it does not work in reverse or forward. i have turned it off and on. Played with the basket. Cleaned out...

Hi Pat!

Shredders are probably the most misunderstood, underused and abused equipment you can ever find.
Home shredders ideally work best with regular dry 20lb or even 24lb bond paper, and only a few sheets at a time.
If it says 5 sheets, feed it only 4, and no more.

Shredders don't like gummed labels, stamps, cellophane, rubber bands, staples, paper clips, plastic sheets, or any such other materials such as window envelopes or manila envelopes.
Don't even try shredding credit cards. They wreck the shredder gears.

If you have important documents on heavier paper, simply tear them lenghtwise from top to bottom in one inch wide strips.
Then you can take that to a bondfire, open pit BBQ or just put them in a bucket full of water.
After a few days, add some flour and use the paste for some project such as a bird's nest.

If you bught this shredder only 2 months ago it must have some warranty left on it.
My first action would be to just take it back to the store you bought it from and demand my money back. As simple as that.

Being under warranty, and if you followed the instructions, warnings and suggestions printed in the User Manual, there is no reason at all that you should be picking at it with tweezers.

Failing that, there must be some assurance this piece of ... equipment will work some time that's deemed reasonable without breaking down again.

In any case, best of luck.

Please feel free to contact me anytime.

Won't turn off

The optical switch may be clogged. UNPLUG the machine and remove all shreddings from under the cutters. Look down from the top and in the middle to be sure that there is nothing blocking the "electric eye" located there. Shredding labels or self stick envelopes can leave pieces stuck to the eye.

Broken plastic teeth

I suggest you just go buy a new shredder, otherwise, if you really want to fix it. That would cost you more then you go buy a new shredder.

Will not shred will go in Rev

I just fixed a similar issue. My AS702MX shredder fell off my desk while I was emptying the basket. When I tried to use it after that it only ran in reverse, not in auto/forward (it was not jammed). This meant that the motor was still working. Since this shredder is so old, no longer under warranty, and not working anyway, I decided to open it up. I unscrewed the 5 screws on the bottom (that's all), then the plastic covering opened up. While looking at the shredder from the top (without the plastic cover) you will see a small black plastic trigger mechanism in the middle (this is what the paper hits to start the shred) this piece will push a copper filament onto the motor to complete the "auto" circuit. Well the fall had caused the plastic trigger to dislodge on one side... I popped it back into place and closed it up, and its working fine now. It was really simple to fix.
